That was indeed the PAS pump on the early 405's. Some of the early diesels actually had a double pulley from the camshaft to drive both the PAS and the vac pump for the brakes.

Because the driven back axle from the BX already existed, so it was cheaper just to shove that on to make a 4x4 model than it would have been to adapt the 405 back axle to accept a diff and driveshafts.

Bit of a shortcut, but hey, it worked.

Would a lektricky pump from a C5 not do?
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Possibly, although there may be issues with the seals being for the different fluid that the C5 uses.. Synthetic isn't it?

C5's use LDH (iirc). Orange stuff, not proper LHM

As far as I knew, Peugeot used the axle because any dramatic change in the height of the rear end of the car (such as fully loaded boat) caused the rear driveshafts to wear or even fail, like in the Pulsar GTi-R's that get slammed by chavs. They wanted to keep the height right, as the car's big selling point was supposedly the handling.
Although i could see how it'd be to save money too!

It's LDS, but I see no reason why it wont work with LHM, if new seals are fitted.

It's still all crap, bring back good old LHM, not all that LHM + and all that synthetic shit that followed it.

Probably not, It is the most reliable part on a BX16V.

I know this, because I have not replaced it yet.

As long as it's not LHS (Liquide Hydraulique Synthetique) - that's the red stuff used in the DS, before LHM (Liquide Hydraulique Minerale) was introduced. Dreadful stuff LHS, it was red and corroded as badly as brake fluid. But what a wonderful ride it gave.

Wasn't there also an clear fluid used on DSs in between the change to LHM? - did I make this up? probably.

I gave a bottle of LDS a shake in Euro car parts last year and was surprised just how thin it was - looked like antifreeze or sommat. Hey, maybe it was antifreeze and I'm a moron.
