Cheap insurance for young person

Those quotes sound about right, maybe even a little cheaper than I'd expect. Pass Plus didn't seem to make a difference for me so I didn't bother with it.
When I started driving (a full 10 months or so ago) my insurance was about £1800 for a ZX diesel, which has the same 1.9 diesel as the BX. Now, with almost a year under my belt insurance has gone down about %30-%40, with no claims (fingers crossed) it'll be about HALF what it was for the first year!
I remember in your wanted thread, I told you about Endsleigh. They give discounts for students, so if you are one, they should be a fair bit cheaper than anyone else.
From what I've heard NFU Mutual are the way to go, much cheaper! My friend has a series III Land Rover, he was quoted £2k on comparison sites but he's now insured with NFU for about £750, and I believe it's fully comp aswell.
If NFU aren't an option, as they aren't with me, then I found Money Supermarket was the best comparison site, the Tesco one also works.
It's really a case of accepting that you'll be legally ripped off for the first few years, until you start building your no claims.

I've been with NFU for about 12 years now, and every year I still do a bit of comparison checking, but NFU still come out as best for me by a mile! ( I pay £134 a year for fully comp!)From what I've heard NFU Mutual are the way to go, much cheaper
Also James, you are rapidly approaching your 1st Anniversary of insurance, so hopefully your no-claims bonus will start to apply! That should make a significant saving on your premiums, whoever you decide on.
I know that if I restrict my mileage, I could probably get a cheaper "Classic Car" insurance, but Monica is a daily driver, and I also have cover for business use included. If I decide to put Monica into semi-retirement at some stage in the future, I would probably go down the "Classic" route, but until then I am perfectly happy to keep renewing my annual NFU Cover!

NFU can be very competitive for things like Land-Rovers, but often not for normal cars. After all, they are based around farmers, and farmers often drive land-rovers and the like.Tourist wrote:From what I've heard NFU Mutual are the way to go, much cheaper! I'm also quite impressed by any teenager being able to get insurance for under £1000 these days. I've heard of figures as high as £2500 even for small cars, just because of postcode and/or expected use. It may be seen as a rip-off by you at the moment, but when you consider that 17-21yo male drivers are without doubt the largest risk driver out there, then there's no surprise that they pay the most.
Given a couple of years experience and no-claims bonus, you then prove that you're not a stereotypical teenage idiot who is going to "give it billy big bollocks" everywhere, and hence crash into a tree/another car/a load of innocent pedestrians. Once you've proved this, your insurance then becomes sensible. By the time I was 21, my insurance was a fifth of what it had been when I started driving.

I appreciate that NFU may well be more competitive with agricultural vehicles, however I do know of someone who's 18-19, they've held a license for about a year and they have 1 years no claims; they're insured on a late Peugeot 306 HDI (2 litre) for £400 or so fully comp. That sounds very competitive to me, now consider a car like the BX which is far less mainstream and probably the last thing to attract boy racer types, and I think you're on to a winner
I can't get quotes myself, but I'd put money on NFU being a better deal than many other insurers.

Something else I've noticed when it comes to insurance:Tourist wrote:a late Peugeot 306 HDI (2 litre)
Peugeot 306's are a bit of an oddball. I've never quite understood why, but they are remarkably cheap to insure. The groupings they were given when new were significantly lower than equivalent size'd cars (both car and engine) at the time. Even when compared to something like a Xsara or ZX, which is essentially the same car.
Worthwhile bearing in mind if you're looking for very cheap insurance... get a quote on a 306.

Good point; a 306 XRD is group 4, and my friend when he'd passed his test got a better quote on the 306 than a 1.0 AX! I know which I'd rather be driving, and it wouldn't be wearing chevrons...

Move to New Zealand where insurance is not compulsory and licences at 15.
Which explains why you often hear of a teenager wrapping a high performance car around a power pole.
To think my first car was an 1975 Austin Allegro 1500cc 22 years ago and it cost me $259 Third Party Fire and theft. Location Location Location also helps to reduce premiums.
