how many miles can a old bx 14 do!
Our last BX we have, a 1.4 st tropez is still going strong, we use it as a faithful loan car, its great for this purpose as its low tax, but big. The poor old thing now has an amazing milage 176,000 miles ive seen lots higher on d's and td's but never on a 1.4.
the only rough thing about it apart from a bit of blue smoke is the ever creeping rust, but every mot it get a new rash of weld on it, I think it will be with us for a fair while yet
has any one got a 1.4 with higher miles on it?

Nice to know that that at 140k mine's not the only one that's been around a bit. The engine is still really good on mine, although I suspect that it may be the gearbox that will fail first. Like the last car I bought from inside the M25 (an old Dyane 6, currently awaiting major welding work) the syncro on 2nd is weak, although in the case of the BX, once you've gone a few miles the problem goes away.

While not a bx or even a citroen i drive a scania at work. It runs 7 days a week day & night. On a 58 plate just gone past 600000 km's sweet as a nut mind u uses a litre of oil a day so in effect it is changing it's own oil

Obviously some is down to mileage and type of journey, but I think a lot of deterioration is down to either people thinking "It's just an old car, I won't bother with maintenance", or putting on the cheapest poor quality parts available.
Plus time left standing can lead to its own kind of deterioration.

I am convinced that the reason our BX is still going strong is the fact it is used just about every day. It gets serviced regularly. Any problems are addressed - as has been done today - a little leak appeared it got fixed (a pretty permanent fix not a bodge). If it gets damaged it gets repaired. Holes have been welded. And it get's polished and hoovered every now and then....
I use good oil and reliable fuel. The auto box isn't ignored either. I don't drive it roughly although it does get let loose: exploring the further end of the speedo when it's appropriate and it does like to go 'round the bends at a decent pace.
A lot of it's survival is obviously down to it's previous owners (who account for 93% of its mileage) and hats off to them. If your St.Tropez is still happy, just make sure you apply the above approach to it and there's no reason its mileage couldn't double!

Hi
My old TZD hatch went to the great scrapyard in the sky with 286000+ and i still have the engine and gearbox.
The Green Hornet had 227000 or there abouts when picked up from Tim last year after which the BXAGON and other long trips it now has 251598
and is still going strong.
Needs some welding this year only in the usual places.

hello
I think everyone here is right, the key to keeping theses old cars going so long is daily use and servicing, we have a xantia we look after with well over 300,000 on the clock, and was talkig to a customer the other day who cx had clocked up 700,000 before the scrapman cometh

One of the TDs has 160k on it, the other closer to 200k I think. My petrol TRS 1.6 went to about 180k before I converted it to TD, but it would have gone on for a lot more, there was nothing much wrong with it. The BMW bike's just gone past 91,000 miles, the Dolly's well over 100k and the MX-5's over 125k.
In fact I think the lowest mileage four-wheeled vehicle I've got is the 1974 H van - that's only just about 90,000 - km, not miles.

Is that because that's physically as far as it's possible for an H van to travel in 36 years? (hur, hur! Used to have one myself which was also low mileage...)KevR wrote: In fact I think the lowest mileage four-wheeled vehicle I've got is the 1974 H van - that's only just about 90,000 - km, not miles.
