What makes you/them think new pistons are required? The bottom end of the XUD is very strong, and you rarely hear of problems. IF a recon head is required from memory I was quoted about £200 last year for the head and fitting (even at my speed) should be done in a day so 8 hours at whatever the hourly rate is down there. Plus say £50 for a gasket set (you can get them cheaper but a garage will tend to mark them up). Plus whatever the injectors cost...
I would say close to half that without the (probably not needed) bottom end work, although maybe they'd want to do that in order to put a guarantee to the head job? Maybe £300 for the HG change alone? Even if I had £1000 I'd be reluctant to spend it on a fully recon engine in your situation, put it towards repairs that may be needed elsewhere IMO.

I asked him what he'd do and what it would cost. I think the head is cracked as the rocker cover is full of mayonnaise, but there's no sign of HG failure in the water or the oil. Injectors, hoses, etc need replacing, they'd do a rebore, put a recon head on, etc etc. It was very much a guesstimate.
We had a sensible conversation and he knows cits and bxs, so it was reassuring. Just seems like a sensible thing to do with a car that has 200k on the clock.
Others have quoted £400-500 for the HG work, £200 for a new head, then £160 for injectors....that's already £860, so the marginal cost of someone getting it out and redoing it comprehensively isn't much. I'd also use the opportunity to replace hoses and so on.

As Mat said, the bottom end of the XUD is near bullet proof.
Even at 200K miles I'd say you'd most likely still see the otogonal honing marks in the bores when the heads off.

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Would you be suspicious of someone who couldn't spell Xantia?
From what you've said it doesn't sound like too much extra to go the whole way, but I'd still question the need if there are no symptoms. How much would they charge for just a top end rebuild? I would expect the reduction to be more than £140...
