Right, you degenerates, back on topic.

I've realised why I like engine services - they're specialists. Their USP is that they do a few things, well. Medway Citroen do everything, and you're as likely to hear one of the mechanics swearing "I effing hate effing Citroens" when you go in there.

£1k??!! I\'d buy a second hand lump for peanuts! XUD\'s don\'t really break, do they? Change any dodgey hoses, new h/gasket and timing belt maybe. Do the clutch while it\'s out, but no more. Thats the whole point of the diesels isn\'t it? Bangernomics? BXs like valvers are highly strungs, you need to baby them more. Diesels....christ we ran the estate with no coolant or well below the minimum oil level in quite often (as they both leaked) but we just never sorted them. It hasn\'t missed a beat, still starts first time!

£1k on ANY XUD is overkill defined IMO. But your call obviously.

Blimey, football-head, that's brought a dose of realism to the mix  I've sat and tried to balance the economics of owning old cars and if you can't do your own repairs it costs a fair bit of money, period.

My own opinion is replace the engine, get the clutch done like you say, and Bob's your Aunty. Ultimately, an engine swap could be very quick, and you do have a spare engine, Oscar whcih might be your best option economically. It's your choice though, of course. :)

I'll give you a lift to get it or there's a cheap van hire place in the dockyard and I'll pay for some of the spares you don't want and I do. That's my best offer

Legalities aside, if you spend ANY money, you\'re doing bangernomics wrong ;)

I think you'll hear that with anyone who works on them regularly...

Mine wasn't quite up to that when I did the head last year (176k) but you were right! No detectable wear ridge in the bores either. I guess only you [Oscar] can answer the question of whether the warm glow of satisfaction is worth the extra outlay?

is it a banger, a car that you are going to get rid of in a year or so tops or is it a keeper and are you going to lavish some real, hard earned money on it.

I'm all for bangernomics, me, but there are times when you have to take a judgement call. You can swap the engine for a known good un for about half of the bill you're thinking of spending. Or you can spend the money on an abused BX that's had a hard life with periods of neglect in between.

Throw a new engine in, change the clutch and timing belt/water pump and drive it. Is the other car for spares or to go back on the road again - if so, do it first, cos it'll be cheaper and get you going again.

Rather than scrapping, sell 'EndofLife' to a forum member for parts or fixing.

Basically, either spend the money on 'EndofLife' cos you're going to keep it a very long time (but do it with a known low mileage engine swap) or put the other car back on the road. Both should cost c. £500 and that's two months depreciation on a new C5.

EFA and all that. You're right though, fix it up or sell on for parts is best option.
Also agree with Richard, the spares package advertised on here would be ideal: chuck the 'new' engine in and you're laughing.

I've spoken to M. Morin, he's not available until Sunday night, so I'll get Swampy back on the road and we'll go up.

Sounds like a plan. Though it's more "across" than "up"
