Battery Capacity

Post by Brian »

OK,

Battery on my trusty 17RD on it's way out after just over 8 years.

Thats the longest time I have ever kept a battery on a car, I must admit that last winter I had to jump with another battery though.

Well I have managed to fit without using a shoe horn, an 88ah battery.

Is this the largest capacity battery fitted to a BX yet?..

That's a top idea for a diesel - if the glowplugs fail or you run out of fuel you can just drive it home on the starter

I thought that as long as the overall ampage was suitable, it was infact the cold cranking amps that was more critical with diesels, especially in the cold weather?

Yes it is Matthew - battery manufacturers tend to design batteries that can be used in as many different vehicles as poss so with an eye on the diesel market CCA tends to rise in line with AH ratings as battery size increases so it's unlikely that a larger battery will have a lower CCA but worth checking at time of purchase.

When I bought the beast I had plans to fit a mod using a bucketload of peltier devices which would have put a very large load on the battery from time to time...

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trks ... Categories

Having bought the battery I found that the prices of peltiers had gone through the roof and the project wasn't viable any more so was shelved.

Last week I was looking at the propagation of rare seeds - some need to be kept at around -20°C for 3 months so I thought about using peltier devices again - prices have now plummetted - time to buy :-)

If you're buying stuff from overseas it's worth noting that any item cost under £18 doesn't attract the attention of customs so it would be very rare to have to pay import duty etc.

It's also worth noting that the battery support in the BX isn't very long so if fitting a bigger battery it's probably a good idea to add a longer support plate under the battery - it doesn't need to be bolted to anything because the clamped battery holds it in place. I used 4mm ally cut to the same size as the battery's footprint.
