What I did today

Post by toddao »

Set off early for France via the misty heights of The Black Forest

Dragging this thing behind the old bus

I went to the part of Alsace where France, Germany and Switzerland meet and picked up this 1986 TRD . It had sat on this parking area for months but fortunately was able to run and lift still.

Image

The bus, apart from being almost forty years old doesn't have that much power really - there's a very hairy and steep ascent up from Freiberg called 'The Devils tail' which I crawled up at 20kmph. No photos of that as I was too busy sweating! On the home stretch

Pelops relaxed in the back

Image

Almost home!

Image

Our town had been in a cold fog all day (its down there somewhere!) while I had temps up to twelve degrees owing to warm air coming from The Alps (seen in the background.)

Image

The 2 x TRDs getting to know each other!Unfortunately the 'new' one will be broken so that the others can live.

Good to see the old bus still going strong!

Is the Devil's Tail the road that loops back over itself? I remember vaguely a road like that near Freiburg...

that is an epic trailor!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Thankyou for all the nice responses. It sort of makes it all a bit more worthwhile. My wife tolerates such behaviour but thinks I'm 'out to lunch' with such endeavours. Occasionally it's good to do such things, shake up the routine..

Anyway, I have been 'negotiating' to buy this car for months. It's was in the same family since new. I have needed a complete Mk.1 interior for my Break for years and all trips to the French scrappers have produced nothing. Then gradually the list of things I need has been growing. Then I got wind of this.

I had been offered a better Mk.1 TRD last year but, not only did it not run or lift, the condition was too good and it went to another enthusiast to be repaired. I needed a spares car that could run/lift and was average condition so I wouldn't have a problem breaking it.

Unfortunately when I clapped eyes on this yesterday it was worse than it had been represented - the seller had been a bit 'imaginative'. He was also an amateur electrican so the wiring has been re-designed -badly. But the price was quickly reduced ( a little bit more than scrap value) and in the boot are some new parts so it was alright really. The interior is not as good as I hoped but it's salvageable . It will also be giving up a lot of its 'front end' to my Break which is still in deep surgery.

The trailer weighed 540kg ( it was hard to find such a 'light' one) and the BX almost 1000kg which was on the line of the maximum towing weight for the old bus, but it coped. When I got home I thought - never again. ( Til I need another 'adventure'!) Going through the high ski fields of The Black Forest ( 10% climbs and descents) was definately hair-raising with such a rig.

Mat asked
Is the Devil's Tail the road that loops back over itself? I remember vaguely a road like that near Freiburg...
Sounds like the one.

Re my 'garage' - it's a barn which unfortunately is riddled with woodworm! I've already had to replace the floor and I've gradually collected used beams to rebuild the frame. It just seems like an impossible job for one bloke and I do everything DIY. Old house, old cars, old barn = too many building sites! :D

/\ I did suggest that the BXagon might divert to take in a piece of Germany. It's just over the Rhine from France. Accomodation is no problem and there's parts to be had as I've been flooded to the point of bursting with the shite from that 'barn of parts' ( it keeps coming too!!) - which are 99% for the later models. I do not need thirty headlights/ten bumpers/500 switches etc.etc and I don't want to just bin it! A mere 1000 kms from London

Yes, I do too and at €12.99 for 20 x .5 litre bottles it's rude not too. That's the more 'expensive' stuff or just the good local quality. Then there's Oetinger (favoured by students/tramps/dolies/skinflints) which is half that price for 20.
I'm trying to take it easy at the moment as boozing is not that compatible with infant and baby induced sleepless nights!

What's the plan then Phil - are you already underway? :D

This all sounds like fun. I hope I'll have my BX ready to join in with all these adventures :)
