Hopefully picking up my 'new' BX 1.9 D 'Meteor' on Thursday!

Post by oilybox »

Hi all,
I am new to the BX ownership 'crowd', my late father used to have a BX 14, (or was it 16?) TRS?, when I was a bit younger, before that he had a G Special, and then a GSA Pallas. I have always been fascinated by the uppy-downy Ciroens ever since. I was looking for a reliable, cheap car to replace my tiny Daewoo Matiz, (which has just gone past 110,000miles!), it's beginning to make nasty noises in the engine, and because of its smallness, it is a pig to work on, parts and insurance are very pricey too!
Looking forwards to the BX, what sort of reliability issues are there? The one I'm getting has lots or service history, and bills etc, but has 165,000 odd miles on it. I am of the old skool of thought 'a diesel isn't run in til it's done 100,000', can anyone vouch for this with the 1.9 Diesel engines?
My one is 1992 car, and looks to be in very good condition for its age.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

Was this the one that was off e-bay?

Anyway, 165k on a 1.9n/a is fine, check through the service history carefully to see when the cambelt was last changed, either 48k or 5yrs, not worth the risk otherwise. The oil & oil filter should be changed every 6k & check the air filter to see how dirty it is, & replace if necessary.

Welcome to BX ownership, keep an eye on rust, & i look forward to hearing how you get on & what other little niggles you might come across. I'm sure we can give you advice on what needs attention 1st as you could potentially have a largish snagging list otherwise.

. . . and don't forget ye olde rear arm bearings. In my experience 100k is the magic number when they need doing - at 165k yours should have been done, but check service history. Other than that; sticky struts (expensive if they're knackered) clonky suspension drop links (not quite sure what they are but they go 'clonk' when they're bust!) and worn out drive shafts make a horrible whirring noise. All in all they are very reliable cars.

I bought my first one in 1997 when they were still being reviewed in 'Which' magazine; 'Quirky old school Citroen, now rather long in the tooth, Long lived if cared for.' Couldn't have put it better myself!

Bits already done.....

Apparently it had its rear arms done in January, by Citroen trained mechanics, and a major service every year since the chap I'm getting it from had it in 2007, and he's only the 2nd owner. It has 2 full, stamped-up service books, from new, from the same dealer.... If that's anything to go by... All seems genuine. Pretty much had new parts whatever it's needed, including several cam belts, recent alternator, and suspension spheres etc....

rear door shuts near the sill
Rea of sills

Bodily speaking, front and rear inner wings all repaired/welded/replaced, plus body cavities and underside have been waxoyled too.... So still all sounding good, and looking too! .....

About the same as mine when I bought it some 6 years ago - now 212K and of no concern. Regularly serviced most BX diesels get close to the 300K mark.

Welcome... and enjoy :-)

The only part of my late lamented BX TZD that went on to a new life elsewhere was the engine - running perfectly at 170,000 at the time!
