Diesel power, upgrade options?

Post by oilybox »

If and when my non-turbo Meteor 1.9 D needs major engine work/and or replacement, is it feasible to fit a turbo from a 1.9 turbo to my engine, if so what parts are required? Will it be more cost effective to fit a remanufactured 1.9 turbo diesel BX engine, or a more modern compatible engine from a more recent Peugeot or Citroen model?.... In the meantime, will a K&N filter and free-flow exhaust improve performance by a noticeable amount?

TZD gearbox, driveshafts 1.9 TD engine from suitable donor (many if you use the N/A camshaft)
TD exhaust.
K&N is not going to do much apart from make it sound nasty.
Have fun :)

I guess you could say I have a free flow exhaust on my TZD now 8)

Freeflow as in straight line to the rear silencer/muffler. Yes it is a bit noiser but given how noisey the diesel engine is you dont notice it.

Preformance wise? Not sure on that one but if my calculations are right and the low level fuel light does actually work it would seem better fuel consumption.

Best thing you can do is ensure everything's working as it should, don't drive around with excess weight, get good tyres with low rolling resistance, use good diesel and a shot of Millers Cetane booster per tank. Then, replace the original air box assembly with a Jetex cone filter or the like and make sure the fuel filter's not knackered... and it'll be fine :)

If you want a turbo diesel, buy a turbo diesel. :D

That's pretty much the size of it. The NA teaches you not to rush, or rather, not to use revs to try and rush. Can be frustrating occasionally, but I really enjoy driving an NA diesel quickly. There's a knack to it and it's very relaxing!

I've got a K&N panel filter fitted & it does make a slight difference, but i didn't buy it for performance, it works out cheaper & more eco friendly in the long run than buying the standard paper filters & having to bin them regularly.

I've been toying with the idea of nitrous on the 1.9n/a engine, this would give you the extra performance when you actually need it & would be damn sight cheaper than fitting different engines, turbo's etc...

Hmmm! Nitrous! I'm liking the idea of that!.... I picked up my 1.9 n/a Meteor today, and I'm already pleasantly surprised ... It's no slouch, and I did 215miles on about £25 - £28 worth of diesel!.... I'll get me a K&N I think, too for the cost effectiveness, and the slight increase in 'oomph'.... Let me know if you get any further with the Nitrous idea, eh?

The K&N panel filter will do little to boost power, improve take up or indeed economy.

In my experience replacing the whole convoluted air box set up with something simpler with a simple cone at the end has made a noticeable difference.
