Struggle

Post by Discoil »

I was driving up a slight rise towards traffic lights, just over 30 mph ( speedo reading ) and the motor was struggling to go up it !

 That's when I realised I was still in 5th gear [-X

When my gran bought her first car with a 5 speed 'box, she couldn't understand why when she only ever used the first 3 - turned out she was shifting from 2nd to 5th

I cant talk there is nothing worse that missing a gear when you are on a steep hill with 30 odd pairs eyes watching you and a tail of cars behind you. Worse when you do it in front of you co workers who nearly slams into the back of you.

While the pedal box was knackered on my TGD I found I could do pretty much everything I needed to do in 3rd gear; why anyone would need to go any faster than 30mph is beyond me. Complete madness! :D

On routes I know well and where I can predict my speed with some certainty, I'm happy to allow the revs down below tickover speed to as low as 700 - around roundabouts for example - before easing the power in gently to pull away again.
