Insurance Company avoiding transfer charge to new vehicle

Post by Jack »

I urgently need to deal directly with an insurance company so that I can change the policy to cover of my BXs without charge, so need to go direct to the insurance company rather than through a broker. Just to clarify, £20 extra on the annual policy doesn't matter as long as I don't have to pay £25 every time a broker answers the phone. (I used to be with Quinn but they don't take cars over 20 years old).

Any ideas please?

I use footman James, they charge £20 admin fee if I add or remove a car or driver.

Peter James have taken to stiffing me £30 every change I make. Less than pleasing given how often I change cars!

All companies charge for changes, it's where they make all that extra cash.

However, some ONLINE ONLY companies don't charge an ADMIN fee if you do the change yourself online, the only charges/refunds being if the cost of the new policy differs from the original.

For my "normal" insurance i use Swiftcover, as well as being one of the cheapest (for MY circumstances) they don't charge admin for changes I make.

I'd avoid Admiral. They make you print your own certificate and then charge £60 for cancelling a policy!!!

+1 for Swiftcover, who were also cheapest for my circumstances. Having said that though, I tried to change back to the BX from the Focus and the quote was declined! I then phoned up their elusive phone support, to be told that it would be £20 admin fee to change it over the phone, but if I did it myself it would be free...

I can understand insurance companies covering their costs for change of policy but a £60 fee for cancelling a policy is bloody ridiculous and a clear rip off. I've just sold my Mitsubishi L300 and have just cancelled my insurance as the quote for my new vehicle was too high with Adrian Flux. I was just going to let it run because it run's out on the 18th of May but my no claims cannot be used on the new policy whilst the old one is still running. The lady on the phone was very helpful and said she would send out proof of my no claims today but didn't mention anything about a cancellation fee? I wonder if I'm in for a nasty suprise

I ended up paying the best part of £80 to cancel my Adrian Flux policy early. They were unusually cheap for insuring a modified 205, but decided to tell me it would cost me an extra £500 to change from the BX 16v to an Alfa 156 2.0. For the remaining 3 months of the policy. An extra year's no claims wasn't worth it, so I binned it off early. Only to be told that I couldn't actually cancel over the phone, as the car was still in my possession(?). Thoroughly unpleasant experience.

Needless to say I won't be going back any time soon.

I had a similar issue with them and found their customer service diabolical!

Thanks for your replies everyone. Swiftcover sounds exactly what I am looking for but when I talked to the broker I used last time (as they had all my details) their (1500 mile) quote wasn't much more than a third as much as Swiftcover (10,000 mile). So i might get two policies from a broker (one to change & keep and one to cancel) or take Swiftcover for as long as I need to swap between the BXs that are up for sale. Hopefully I can shift them by the end of the month so I just need to take a view on the cheapest option. I've got all weekend to think about it as I couldn't book the first MOT till Tuesday.

Never believe what a broker tells you anyway, they're just out to make as much commision as they can, they're not your friend!

Indeed, go straight to the company themselves.
