Anyone remember.....
.... the discussion that was on here a while back about a 14 petrol v's a 19n/a diesel and the back and forth about which would be quicker?
I can say that my money is definitely on the 14 petrol still, using the StTropez all weekend has shown me that they will out accelerate many cars that you wouldnt expect it too

Re: Anyone remember.....
No, don't remember. But I do remember the claimed 0-60 times were identical 11.2 seconds. My old 14 was just fine - good car, but the diesel is better with a full load. Prefer the extra torque of the 1.6 for towing the boat and its more frugal on petrol doing so. 1 or 2 up the 1.4 is a great car. Confess haven't driven TU engined one but same HP 72 as 150 and presumably same sweet gearing. Do not fancy the 4 sp box though!

Re: Anyone remember.....
The 14 (TU) is much quicker, and that's speaking as somebody who's owned both (and is currently still driving a 19n/a D)
0-60 times on the cars aren't identical by any stretch - 12-13secs I reckon for a 14 and 15ish secs for the diesel...maybe more. The power might be roughly the same, but the petrol hangs onto it for a longer period of time and also makes use of shorter gears ratios, because it can rev higher. The torque output at the wheels is probably in the 14's favour, even if the engine actually produces less of it overall.
There is more realistically very little between a 14 petrol and a 16 petrol in my experience.
Only problem I found with the 14 was that if you did gun it everywhere, it really cained petrol. Not on 16 automatic levels, but still struggling to reach 30mpg. Pussy-footed driving used to yield high 30's though, and if you consider the tax savings and the fact petrol is cheaper than diesel I wonder if the 14 petrol actually costs the same to run as a cheaper diesel too

Re: Anyone remember.....
Having driven your St Tropez while I owned my NA diesel, the 14 definitely wins, but it has lower gearing, which helps. Not sure towing a Bond Equipe on a car trailer with a 14 would be much fun though. My NA diesel just plodded along quite merrily. You have to rag a 14 to go quickly, whereas an NA diesel can be made to go quickly(ish!) without ever having to go beyond 3000rpm, which is why it can still return decent MPG.

Re: Anyone remember.....
Oh definitely agree Kitch and Ian,
The 14 is just livelier but the mpg can and does suffer massively when you give it some beans as even in 5th it is revving too much, the trade off is even at 80mph you can still accelerate in 5th just by pushing the loud pedal some more, no change down needed
I am beggining to think i need an N/A diesel in the fleet though, just to make me behave and get some good mpg in return sometimes.

Re: Anyone remember.....
You could always put a chock beneath the throttle pedal of the TZD. That'd have much the same effect and be cheaper!

Re: Anyone remember.....
I don't think you'll notice any massive improvement over the TD in economy with an n/a. Not enough to justify the expense of purchase anyway!
Get a 19 petrol mk1.....refinement

Re: Anyone remember.....
Actually, probably the opposite. Generally used to average 48mpg in my NAs, TXD Turbo could pretty easily achieve 54mpg.

I'd be up for that - maybe combine it with a BX meet and we could all have a bit of fun! Quite a few in October

Me and Stinkwheel have been drag racing at Santa Pod in 2CVs. I can't say the results were particularly exciting! Definitely a sport that needs horsepowers.

I'd be interested to do that actually It'd sound nice doing it, but BAH is probably quicker in all honesty.mat_fenwick wrote:I'd prefer it if you brought the S1!
