more rust

Post by kernowtim »

Got a bit or rust  around the left hand tailgate hinge on the estate, the panel has rusted away above and around where the hinge is welded, looks like its only fixed at the bottom and the whole thing is flexing when opened .there is a rust hole in the inner wing and rear side panel near bumper. Starting to think this car is a waste of time and money!! Had it almost 3 weeks now..
Given up trying to post a picture, I blame my tesco hudl

It is fixeable bud, but at a price, probably a high one. Suggest for now you cover it in rust killer.

That's a rust place I haven't seen before!

BX's do have some usual places where they always seem to go on the saloons and estates but the estates do tend to rust around the rear wings.. Mine has a nice round 50p sized hole on the middle of the offside rear wing.. and crusty spots around the bottoms and where the bumper attaches to the wings - very thin metal here but this has been like this for several years now and the structural bits are fairly solid still...

From the 3 BX's I have and poking around several decaying others I don't really think you'll easily find a rust free BX now unless it's had some work. Even cosmetically excellent looking cars will very probably have corrosion on the front inner wings and holes at the top of the rear arches - just try to push down around where the wheel brace is kept!

If it's got an MOT and doesn't have more major rust around the subframe mounts I'd just enjoy it and start making a list for when the better weather comes!

Trouble is the hinge isn't secure and the panel is flexing when tailgate opened, looks like its moved back slightly as its no longer attached at the top, think I'll rust treat it, try to keep the water out and not open tailgate, which is also cracked!!

i wonder how the water would get into the roof so as to cause it to rot out like that!

It does happen there as my TGD Estate has had both tailgate hinges repaired in the past in about the same place. Not a perfect job as the roof paint has been messed about but it works. I believe Timex may have had trouble there too but Mike had better confirm this to you. It can be done by a competant welder ime sure.

All these stories of rust on the bx amaze me! When I left the UK all the bx's were still in good condition. On thought the bx was going to be good against rust.
On my bx I have found one thumb size rust spot on the whole car. The advantages of living on the Costa Blanca and no salt on the roads.

Good luck with the welding.

I think it's likely to be cracking of the sealant used, which lets in water and then holds it against the metal. Certainly I noticed that mine had cracked in this area back in 2004, especially where the hinges are welded on. But cavity wax seemed to penetrate well and slow down any rusting.

Spot on I think - the grey one's going in the same place and will need attention soon. Tailgate's starting to droop on one side. I've seen it on lots of estates.

As for general rust, the grey one has that tailgate hinge, a couple of tiny holes at the very rear of the sills (where the mud gets trapped in the arch, and is starting to go slightly on the inner wing seams.

The white one has exactly the same tiny holes in the sills, and I've just done the inner wings, welding in sections from a rust-free scrapper.

I don't think that's too bad really for a pair of 24 year-old workhorses which live outside, get driven on filthy country lanes all the time, and rarely get any kind of wash/jetwash to keep the crud off! The 106 I'm working on at the moment is far more crumbly underneath.

I should use another can of wax up there then...

Anyone have a handy image set / sheet of all the best access points for wax injection on a BX?
I've used all the obvious grommet and drain holes etc but I'm sure theres others I've missed.

the main cause of tin worm in most cars is, from between any metal that is overlapped/double skinned,
and the inside of box sections,
most manufactures do/did not coat metal to metal surfaces with any form of rust protection,

I would suggest that the rear wheel arch seam is worth a coat of wax from the inside - I've seen a few (including mine) which have started to rust through the outer panel where arrowed. With mine, the whole area was full of water from leaky rear quarter windows.

Also, the rear subframe mounts can rot out - mine were pretty good when I checked them last year so again I filled them with plenty of wax.

Was it via the windows, or the rear vents? I've always found the water pisses in through the vents.

Now you come to mention it, I can't be sure. I've sealed them up with black Sikaflex, but I've also avoided washing with a pressure washer. It's remained dry since, so could be either cause.
