Steering rack gaitors

Post by mijfife »

Hi all, I need to replace both steering rack gaitors on the TZD, I'm looking for recomendations for the better makes and places to buy these from. I've read a couple of older threads but haven't managed to source the Drivelink or Shaft tech varients mentioned.
Are the gaitors the same throughout the range or are the power steering models different? I dont see anything listed on GSF or Euro Car Parts site either. I've seen a Quinton Hazell set advertised, QG1028, are these any good?

gsf can supply these the nearside is a pig to change its rack out or try to stretch it over the union which is possible if your careful. Try AEP or malcolm lockwood or euro car parts.

If you warm it up in some hot water and aid it on with a little lube it should stretch over the union.

Hi all, after much swearing, I managed to fit my steering rack boots tonight :D
Neither my local Euro Car Parts or GSF said they listed them any more so I got them through Dingbro. The kit was made by First Line and the part number is FSG 3165, just in case it is of help to anyone else. The kit had all three boots and the left hand one was stretchy enough to go over the ram knuckle and thick enough not to tear.

One wee question regarding the leakage return pipe, as pictured on the rack below, I'm wondering if my clear plastic return pipe is broken inside the rubber take off (arrowed) It only pushes in about 10mm and feels quite flimsy inside the rubber bit, is this normal or has it been broken at some time? I've borrowed a pic of a Xantia rack from the internet but it looks pretty much the same anyway.
Regards, Jim

The small plastic pipe only pushes in about half an inch or so, tho it is a low ptessure pipe it should be ok, a small cable tie around it or a sprung steel clamp should give some extra security.

It feels tight enough in the rubber bit, I just thought the rubber bit would have been a bit stiffer! All seems to be working fine so that's the main thing :D

Cheers Jim
