Earn clubcard points on your 16V!

Post by docchevron »

Those of you with 16v's may remember that last year some Tesco's stores were selling 99octane fuel. Then it dissappeared.
However while filling the diesel up yesterday I noticed that tesco's brislington (bristol) is selling it again, I understand tesco in Cirencester is also selling it so it seems to be available in several outlets.
Oh, and its 98.9 a litre! Way cheaper than I've been paying for Optimax lately.
My car seems to love it! Runs smoother, cooler and has more grunt!
Only drawback I found was that it did a bit less to the gallon. I suspect because I was using the extra performance! :D :D
But at that price I dont mind. Optimax is 105.9 round here at the mo

105.9?
Mind you that probably shows how long it is since I last bought petrol, although the price of diesel is getting silly now too.

Yeah I know mate, every time I fill the 16v up I feel like I'm buying OPEC!
Costimax is never the same price twice. The most I paid was about 3-4weeks ago, it was 108.9. I nearly died on the forecourt but she was very thirsty and I had no choice.....

havbe to say i run my 16v on std octane fuel! ran it on high octane for a few months and honestly couldnt tell the difference between the two !that was until the car was left for a period of 2 weeks not used! then the super unleaded it had only managed 180 miles for the tank!
the higher fuel goes off after 10-14 days not used!

Mine runs everso slightly better on Optimax or Tesco 99 than most normal unleadeds, but the main reason I use them is to protect the valve seats. 16v's were designed to run on 4 star, not unleaded and Optimax is as close as you can get. Boosters help it more too.

Tecsos in winchester has been selling the 99 for over a year now.

Mine runs like a stuffed pig on 95octane. Costimax works well but I notice a marked increase in performance on tescos finest!
I blew a focus st (asbo) away on the tesco fuel :D :D
My mates CX Turbo runs much better on tescos stuff but then it goes like bl**dy hell anyway! 8)

I'm told the seats on valvers are hard enough to run unleaded so long as they aint used exclusively for racing?
Mine doesn't seem to be suffering for not having lead and I dont run an additive......
If I find a cheap supply of aviation fuel I'll try that! :D

Im fairly lucky as I have 3 tescos within 6 miles of my house, and all 3 sell 99Ron.

I dont think Shell sells Optiflop anymore do they?
I think they all sell V-Power which is 99ron, not 98ron like Optiflop.

On the plus note, petrol in the garages seems to be going down around my area as well, so looking at 97.9p a litre of tescos finest 99ron, and their tesco value 95ron costing only 92.9. Pretty good considering both were above £1 before the summer.
I own a saxo, but don't hold that against me. I now have a BX aswell ;)

I don't think a higher octane rating will protect valve seats - other addititives as found in 'LRP' may.

Detailed discussion here - seems no real problem with 16 valve engines.

I'm told that the valves and seats are hard enough to take unleaded without issue, I'm not sure I'd wana race the car all the time without lead in her though.

I'm not convinced ny additives so dont use them and the engines as sweet now as when I built it. I'd rather use leaded but theres only one garage in bristol that sells it and its over 150p a litre!
on my wage I could only afford to do 30 miles a year in her at that price!

Nearly all the Historic Formula Juniors who run highly modified BMC,Ford or Fiat engines run on Millers additive to enable them to run on unleaded which is compulsory.
