Knobs! Help!

Post by djoptix »

Does anyone know if the gearknob thread on the BX is the same as the AX? And does the AX have lift up reverse?

IIRC the threads are exactley the same, the Visa is too.
I've never seen a AX with 'collar' reverse but my experience of AX's is limited.

However the gear knob itself will be the same in either.
The only difference is that knobs for cars that has rev next to first have a spring in the top, knobs for cars with reverse on the end of fifth have a rubber sleeve, which can be removed to install spring.

Same gearknob as AX Visa and I think late CX models, AXs always had reverse in the space below 5th.

Hi

Yes the thread is the same with BX/AX but I'm not so sure about Visa - I tried fitting an AXGT knob to the C15 and found the diameter of the threaded end is definitely a few mm smaller on the van gear lever.

Not aware that any AX's had the lift up collar, the GT and Diesels sisn't at least.

Cheers

I do wonder if there is a difference between BX gearknobs with the lift up sleeve and those without. My recollection of dismantling the one on my TD (which has reverse by 4th) was being surprised to find the lift up collar intact and in apparently its original form, locked by the gearknob.

Either a lift up collar is shorter (allowing the movement) - or the knob has a groove to allow the sleeve to move into it - or the gear lever is longer - or something - but the movement has to be allowed somewhere.

face lift AX's (95 on) have push on gear knobs.

Jeremy, all the BX gear stick/gaiters are the same, where a BE3 gearbox is fitted the spring under the gearknob is removed and a piece of rubber inserted so the 'gate' cant be lifted. Take the rubber out, put the spring in and you have something to play with at the lights, meaning yes billy you can play with your knob in the car when bored!

Later ZX's have the same push on/interference fit knob as the later AX's

I'm not sure I agree so far. I tried fitting an AX GT gearknob to the BX and it was way too big.

Hmm. It's for a company I found on the 'bay making custom gearknobs. They advertise them for the AX but I'll obviously have to measure my knob (oo pardon) and tell them what dimensions to make the hole to accept the shaft (oo er missus).

For anyone interested I did get a gearknob off this guy: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Epsilon-Alpha-Gifts, I sent him a BX gear knob and he made it to fit.

I'll post some pictures but it fitted really well. However, the overall diameter of the ball was less than the original knob, which means that with the pool ball you can pull the reverse up too far and the plastic shaft can spin round the metal main shaft, leading to extremely approximate gear changes!

However this could easily be fixed by sticking some sort of collar on. I'll report more when I can take pics, but I'd give the guy a thumbs up - he got back to me really quickly and a custom made gear knob for about £7 is a bargain IMHO!
