BX 1600 MISSING on decelleration

Post by John »

I've a problem with my BX 1600 RS (petrol). Since having the valve stem oil seals redone - engine was smoking badly and failed MoT on emissions - the car has run less well. The engine judders at times and misses on decelleration. Have tried resetting the ignition timing, renewing plugs and so on but without any success. Can anyone help? :(

What do you mean by missing? Popping in the exhaust? This can be caused by a leaking manifold gasket.

Odd - I was just about to post a question about this myself also on a 16.

On deceleration I get a sound that could be popping but to me sounds like a bit of exhaust is rattling on the ground (I've checked BTW - it's not..) I first noticed it in the Clyde tunnel with the window down and thought it was coming from the van in the next lane but I got the same today on my own.

It's only on acceleration and it definitely sounds like it's coming from the rear - could it also be a bad manifold?

How loud is it? Could it not just be the natural popping and banging contained in the exhaust that most cars do?

Havent noticed that on mine I must say and I have a finely tuned ear, you would normally put that kind of thing down to timing but if thats already been checked? Is the exhast sealed ok?

It's not very loud - I missed it at first! It really does sound like a hollow metal something rattling on the ground.

I'm sure it doesn't do it when it's cold but after a fair run. Only does it with the car and engine slowing together.

There is a sight blow in the exhaust at the back box - could be that?

Worth a go mate, the GT had a slight blow when I got it and it made it sound like a farting dog on tickover!
