Well after driving all the way down to North London to look at a 1.4 astra that was meant to be a 2000 model and turned out to be a mechanically sound but very bodily challenged 96, I drove back to Aylesbury and bought a very sweet 1.1 Peugeot 106

We had one of those last year, and achieved between 45 and 55mpg from it. Hopefully you won't have much to do on yours, but we got ours as an MOT failure, and were pleased to find the parts were very cheap. I had to replace the spark plugs (emissions failure), some front suspension bushes, rear brake hoses, rear wheel cylinder and shoes, front brake pads and the exhaust silencer, which only came to around £100 :)

I had new Saxo 1.1 in 1997 which is basically the same, and have to say it was a cracking little car and very frugal and easy to drive.

A mate had one - good little motor. 1 tip - if you need to do the cam belt, definitely change the tensioner as well - he didn't and 15k later it failed, killing the whole engine!
