On the Mk2s, at least with mine and my ex silver one, the rear wiper relay was behind the dash, between the glovebox and the heater controls. You have to remove the glovebox to access it. The front and rear relays were different, so that may be why you're not getting intermittent on the rear.

Ah, OK - the contacts are the same on each socket, and it worked when I swapped it over, which is why I did it this way. I'll have to try to find a rear relay now then, but in the meantime, at least it works now 8)

When I say different I mean different part numbers. I noticed the contacts were the same too, but not sure about the functionality.

I'll have to look at the old one, but as it's Italian :? I do't hold out much hope for finding a useful number on it.

Any chance of a pic of where the relay lives Mike?
Will do tomorrow, but in the meantime the front one is on the fuse panel to the right of the flasher relay, and the rear one is by the drivers A post behind the lower edge of the dash. It may be because of it being a Mk1, but according to the relay location chart in the Haynes supplement the flasher and front relay locations are switched, and the rear relay is buried in the middle of the dash somewhere!
Cheers Mike. It's the front wiper relay location I meant. Might swap for a VW 99 type. You buy yours off eBay?

Yep - there seems to be load of used ones for sale, but shop around - mine was around £7 including postage, but I've seen others for sale at over 3 times that price [-X

That's the tall blue on in the middle of the fusebox, under the glovebox.

I wonder if a XM wiper relay would work. The XM has a slider on the wash/wipe stalk to vary the delay on the intermittent sweep.

Quick update - found this on ebay and couldn't resist:

Visited Themildbunch at their new abode, came away with some much needed bits for Timex, and had a quick look at 2 of his BX's:

Then stopped at the local viewpoint on the way home:

Apologies Tim, only just picked this up. Bit late now I guess #-o

Central locking playing up now - decided not to work tonight, thought it was the fuse but worked once at home. I'll have to consult the book of lies!
