Defenders Blog; N89GJO moves on + Kangoo Appreciation Societ

Post by Defender110 » Sat Oct 20, 2012 12:25 am

Continued from this page i've decided to start a blog page;

http://www.bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic ... 1&start=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Starting with my preventative maintenance of the TZD; 'Giving the front end a bit of a Birthday'

My wife Helen drives the TZD as an everyday commuter and as the alternator packing in has coincided with her annual Teneriffe getaway with her freinds with me having the week off work staying at home with the children I have decided to give the car some much needed preventative maintenance and repairs.

I plan to;
Remove front the front bumper, grill, radiator etc.
1. flush out rad and cooling system.
2. remove and internally clean out intercooler
3. Replace slightly leaking rocker cover gasket.
4. replace the broken alternator (belt done last year with timing belt tensioners and water pump)
5. remove ABS module and inner wing arch before fully inspecting (removing seam sealer if required) then rectify any possible corrosion to neaside front inner wing (offside done last year) including waxoil protection.
6. remove all surface rust to front crossmember and make good including waxoil protection.
7. replace split offside outer CV boot.
8. LHM flush
9. Engine service with all filters and oil change.
9. Remove front doors to properly inspect 'A' pillars and rectify any possible rust issues + waxoil to pillars and door internals.

I started this afternoon with stripping down the front end and replacing the knackered alternator.
With having the week off work I can take my time and strip back anything that is remotely in my way so I can enjoy my tinkering whilst checking other normally inaccesible areas for condition / corrosion.

Image

With the front end stripped out the alternator is very accesible.

Image

The front Xmember is perfect but there is a liitle coorosion on both fan bottom mounting brackets that I want to deal with.

Image

I am a bit annoyed with myself as I have been monitoring the inner wings to try and catch any corrosion before it set in but when I removed the air filter box there was some hidden corrosion that has now set in and will need cutting out.
Image

Although I wanted to keep the original factory fitted radiator hose clips I couldn't figure out how to undo them and came to the conclusion thet are a once only use item and had to cut them off with these hose pliers.

Made to order alternator;

Spot the difference?

Despite my supplier being the ones who let me know there are 4 and 5 ribbed belts fitted, they supplied a 4 ribbed pulley instead of the 5 ribbed ordered so a quick pulley change was needed before fitting.

Front Xmember after treated with Kurust and primer before top coat and waxoil.

Image

After flushing out the cooling system and refitting the rad I refilled it with this fancy cool orange coolant antifreeze as a change from the usual blue stuff. Any leaks come out as easy find bright pink.

Rot cut out

Repair piece formed, the holes are to replicate the original spot welds to inner section.

pre-welding and before the final lip was formed which was done after the section was welded in place,

Under here
Image

Is my beloved TDG Auto currently dry stored in heated garage for future use. I currently don't have a use for it as I need a bigger off-road vehicle for my scuba diving but it is my intention to use this as my everyday car again sometime in the future. Will Tizzy D still be running alongside it, who knows?
