Yes they are a tight fit aren't they!

No need to remove the rad, but it might help if you remove the rad top securing plate.
Not sure which way they come out, depends on which alternator is fitted, some will come up, other need to go down.

Good luck, and get on ebay for some new knuckles in readiness
They think it's all over, it is now!

all done

moving the rad doesn't help much (moves about 15mm)

but taking off the oil filter does :D

it's a tight fit but it comes out from under the car (only just)

all sorted now, i can cancel the order for the new knuckles now

Regret I only spotted this thread now...... the way to do it is remove the o/s headlight enabling you to take out the duff alternator and put in the good one 8) . I saw this done first hand by JKW so know it's ftw

But you can only do that if you remove the LHM tank first (quite messy) :(

Taking off the oil filter allows you to pass the old alternator over the filter housing and out through the underside of the car between the sump and the panel under the radiator

It’s quick, easy a lot less mess all round and no skinned knuckles

Nope, LHM tank remained in place, job was done in a jiffy too .... only hitch was that the belt was shorter than it should have been.
