16v Clutch Cable

Post by Tim Leech »

Im using my 16v a bit at the moment, and enjoying every minute of it, I want to change the clutch cable as its getting quite sticky, my car has A/C so there seems to be alot more pipes!

Is it an easy job? thanks.

Have you sorted all your rusty pipework underneath, Tim:O
You don't want to be leaving a "green blood" trail everywhere do you?

I'm about to change the clutch cable on Monica (my TXD TD) today, if the weather holds, but no AC, so luckily I am missing all those extra pipes;)

When I've done one before, most of the job is straightforward, although you will probably experience lots of cursing & swearing when you come to do the "pedal-end" swap!!!:O Best way is to remove the two bolts (nuts?) that secure the pedal-box, to allow a bit of room for manouevre.
Also be prepared for some skinned knuckles, as there ain't much room behind the engine, to rout the cable through the bulkhead grommet!

Good Luck!:)

Changing the clutch cable is a mare of a job tbh. I did one on my TD recently, which is exactly the same as the 16v. I've changed clutch cables on other cars in 1/2 hr before now, and yet the BX took me the better part of 3 hours, which included having to get right under the car, moving the engine out the way, removing the pedal box and generally swearing rather too much.

The pipes still need changing David, although I have treated them for now until I can get them done by someone. Looks like the clutch cable is a pain, will have to wait for a bit longer as i would like to do it myself to save costs.

I know its a bit of an topic, finally had the cable changed today, my friendly mechanic said it would be a "doddle", only took 15 minutes to get off, but a good hour to refit and lots of scraped knuckels and swearing! I think he wished he hadnt offered to do it now, but it was worth it, the clutch is lovely and smooth and so light now in comparison. :D

just hope he has fitted the outer cable bulkhead end corectly, if not you will need another new cable in a couple of weeks time or so, because if not seatted properly the inner cable will chaff on the brackets it runs through

i always find the later replacment cable with the tiny white snap ring/color a bbbbb to get home fully, especialy as you realy could do with both hands down the back of the engine,

the earlyer cable with one piece plastic end (bulkhead end) was very easy, as you just attatched both ends and just pressed the pedel to engadge the end int its bracket

It's a bit like having a Delia Smith Cookbook out when servicing your washing machine!

The Haynes BOL IS handy, however, to use as a temporary base, on which to place an axle stand, in event of breakdown on soft ground!

If he's a trained technician why on earth is he using the Haynes?

The very first thing I ever learned was to take Haynes manuals and throw them as far as possible.

(I was only taking the piss before BTW)

More likely to jack up the car and remove a rear wheel, unplug the NSR lamp cluster and then open the sunroof.
