Desperately seeking rubber ram-end rack boot...

Post by DLM »

Does anyone within reasonably close reach of the doc have a rubber ram-end steering rack boot? If so, please let him know by PM or phone. That's the Xantia one rather than the standard BX PAS item, which isn't flexible enough to be eased over the ram stud.

Supplies have dried up - and though I do have a generic gaiter kit, we'll be forced to remove a complete rack later today for the sake of this one boot for an MOT retest... which is something best avoided if at all possible.

My sympathy on this one, this has to be about the worst job on a BX.

For anyone who doesn't know, it's not that it's a big job, far from it. It's just such a tedious faff of a job, the o/s end can be done in a few minutes, but not the ram end
They think it's all over, it is now!

DLM, I have one fitted to the rack that came off the TGD. I'll bring it with me mate. It's only a couple of years old so should be ok - it's done few miles. It at least might get you through the MOT! :P See you at Doc's in a couple of hours!
Ken's right though, what should be a fairly simple job in theory, becomes an absolute bugger of a job due to the ram spigot........then of course you got to get the ties on :x

Go to your friendly Unipart dealer and get a BAILCAST boot kit.

Pt.No.DBSR300.This is a universal kit including the BX range. They are

sooooo stretchy.Drivers side is perect, cut the other one to fit. Put a spoon

on the spigot to slide the boot over and some grease On in 5 mins.....

honestly!!

Panic over, David had a rubber one all the time, unless it came from Bandit?
Either way, tis done, although the silly bloody metal clips that came with the kit were utter shite, somewhat too small for the job, and the nuts wre not captaive..
Ho hum.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Many thanks to the doc for doing this job on Grolliffe - and to BXBandit for kindly answering my plea & bringing a boot kit along. Good to see you too Charlie - a slightly different meeting venue from the French campsite we found we'd both checked into a while back.

The boot fitted was obtained from a local Unipart factor after quoting reg no - though I don't think it was the same one manufacturer as quoted above - it wasn't branded Bailcast. I also was pleased to find they had an ABS CV joint in stock nearby (not at the price which is being quoted through ebay, but available within 24 hours).

I can now appreciate the difference between the standard Citroen part for BX (plasticised, non-stretchy - hence needs rack removal/disassembly), and the rubberised kind.

That I can understand - I know about that secondhand from my daughter in Paris. Her student loan is in sterling so the second instalment was worth considerably less than the first one after conversion.
