Steering rack rubber gaitor buying question

Post by pitman »

I have read already through older threads but I have now a specific question.
:D

Are the steering rack boots from Quinton Hazell any good? Will they stretch enough to fit easier?

For the BX, there is a QG1028, but there also a type QG1000, which seems to be a generic one. :?:

I need to change the offside one. BTW, on ebay, they sell a "front LH" one. :?:

I thought, those boots are symmetrical and would fit both sides?

Are there any particular brands or sources I should go for or better avoid?

As mentioned in said previous threads, the boots are very much different on each side, the NS one being the pain to fit, whereas the OS one is dead easy.

I wouldn't try to use generic boots as they're usually rubbish. Might just about do for the OS one, but definitely not for the NS.

the generic rack boots are made of termoplastic which dose not stretch at all, and to fit the N/S boot/gaitor you will need it to stretch a very long way to get it over the ram spigot,

another point to watch is the oppennings at each end of the N/S boot are very slightly diferant diamiters, and if you fit it the wrong way around you will have a job getting it to stay put at the rack end, and you certainly dont want to be taking it back of to have a second attempt, i know bin there and even worn the T shirt,
