Pop the cover off, drop the motor assembly down and have a look at the drive gear.
Has it eaten it's teeth?
It's unusual for a cable to snap, but they can seize up due to lack of use.
The only way to actually fix it though, would be to drop the headlining...
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Holy thread revival!

Was just wondering how much of these instructions (obviously not the sunroof bit) applies to the estate. To repair the tailgate hinge area, the headlining needs to be removed so it isn't ruined.

tailgate hindge repair you can just remove the seal at the rear end and wedge a block of wood between the head linning and roof,

as there is a box section across the rear end of the roof,

Ah, thanks Malcolm. My welder was worried that might crease the headlining, though given the general state of the car, that is not really a concern! I'll let him know.
