Engine mount

Post by MULLEY »

How can you tell whether an engine mount is shagged or not?

I noticed that when pushing down on the front of the car to check the front spheres were soft, i could hear a slight squeeking type sound, not high pitched.

Traced it to the driver side engine mount, its got a metal bracket like a bridge over the top, when i pushed on that, the squeeking sound appeared. Condition wise, visually it looks fine, is this noise normal?

Another sympton is that the car vibrates a fair bit more than i rememberd it used to, the gear lever in particular at idle, vibrates a fair bit. Is this an indicator that an engine mount or 2 might need replacing or again normal & i'm just being paranoid?

Odd that it would sqeek when you push the front of the car down!
But yes, they can and do fracture / wear out.

They aint cheap, but are still available (at the moment at least) and are dead easy to change.

Bad vibration through the stick is usually the bottom mount (or torque link to be more precise about it's function).

To check, try gently jacking up the engine under the sump, if the bush parts company you know it's shagged!
Other method, start engine and watch the mount. Does it move about alot?
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

the only thing i would add to docchevron1472 reply, is place a block of wood between the sump and jack so not to dent the sump

Cheers for the info doc, i take it there's no alternative cheaper engine mount, it has to be the bx specific one?

The bottom mount, isnt that the ackward one to replace, as its mounted on that bracket? I've actually got the rubber part.

Malcom, oh, i was looking forward to denting my sump

You could probably find a mount for somehting that would fit, but I have no idea what, nevere looked into it since they are still available.

The bottom mount (link) is the slightly buggerish one yes.
Easier by a oong margin to remove the O/S driveshaft, remove the entire mount and press the old one out / new one in, then refit.

He used something as normal as a shoe?
I'd have thought he'd be using rhubarb or dried vinegar!
