i use an open ended spaner to prize of the links at the car ends not the box ends,

have you droped out the complete O/S drive shaft, if not it makes the job a lot easyer

we have the issue that the gearbox/body mount bolt is getting in the way of pulling the gear box out
the left hand drive shaft has been removed but the drivrs side drive shaft has not been removed

do you think by removing the drivers side drive shaft this migth help with my bolt issue

does any one know if this is a press stud bolt or does it screw into the gear box

you do need both shafts out, the O/S=right UK drivers side and the N/S=left uk kerb side, these are when sitting in a UK car,

i usualy remove the gear box hanger post/stud

thanks malcom
drivers side is same in Australia we drive on the correct side of the road
not like those french and Americans

was going off the hains workshop manual and didn't mention both drive shafts only the left one (n/s)

drivers side it up in the air will make it interesting to get off

thats why the hayney ass manual is called the BOL (book of lies)

if you dont remove the O/S drivers side= right UK and AUZY cars you risk bending the inner section of this shaft, i have seen it done before and had to help someone out of the manuar who had done just that

well the mighty myrtle the turtle is almost back on the road
some very valuable lessons have been learnt form this little exercise

the biggest is never trust a French man to design a cars engine bay

in the end i have had to remove the starter motor the manifold two engine mounts (lucky one of them needed replacing) and it was almost the case that had to pull the whole engine out (by the time i removed every thing else i may as well have removed the engine)
both drive shafts
haynes has now been renamed the book of fairy tails in our house
i have now replaced
dif seals
clutch cable
clutch
clutch release fork
one engine mount

still to be replaced is the hub bearings on the left side for future interest to replace a clutch should have 1 if not 2 engine hoists a 3rd arm
a friend with a 3rd arm as well (my self and my step dad with only 4 arms all up just wasn’t enough at times lmao)
a way of hunting down the person who designed the engine bay
and making them pay for there ideas of pure evil and torture

we are now having issues that water is leaking out of the manifold so have to take that off tonight and remove the gasket and put another one in hope this one seals (using liquid gasket)

you usualy only need to remove the gear box mount and its spigot/post, both drive shafts, and unbolt the flow valve and regulator from the front of the gear box and secure them out of the way with a wire coat hanger,

i do these and XANT box's on my own with the aid of an engine support beam that has two adjustable hooks, one i atatch to the engine either on the liftting eye or around the main body of the thermostat houseing,

the other atatched to a piece of thin rope which i put right around the gear box,

useing this method it allows you to swing, tilt juglle the box which ever way you need,

i find BX's easyer to do than XANTS

my engine beam cost about 38 quid a few years ago from ebay, i wished i'd bought one sooner its magic

the mighty beat has arisen form its slumber and rides again

only taken the better part of a month all up to get it all sorted and fixed

to add to the list of things that have been replaced add the top radiator to thermostat hose as it started leaking (lucky i still had the one off my old bx after i had to wreck her)

had to take the starter motor off as it had moved and was stopping the gear box from going back into place once removed the gear box slotted right into place not troubles

was UFO's idea to take the manifold off to put the starter motor back into place more easy

(UFO being my step dads name on Aussie Frogs if you hadn't already worked it out)

oh and the fingers on the clutch if i hadn't already said it were less than a millimeter thick where the bearing presses against them
so they were so close to snapping through it wasn't funny
the clutch feels so light now i think I'm going to have to take some time adjusting to how great it feels to drive this car

If you think a BX is bad, try getting under a 405, or a focus (either) or a Jagaur XJ or XF. The BX is positively designed with the intention of taking the engine or the gear box out.

yeah when i took the clutch release bearing off (the old one) it was off center so it was def dew for replacing

oh and the little test drive i took it on last night i didn't hear the noise i though was my hub bearings
so that grinding noise i think was the clutch not the hub
but will only know once i get the car out on the highway and over 80kph

so if it was the clutch and not the hub i just saved myself $150 on new bearings
