Please be a bit more specific regards your problems, like, are you having trouble lining up the splines on the input shaft or just physically getting the job done :? :?

were abouts are you ,

did you remove both drive shafts, if you left the O/S one in that will be why you cant get the replacement box back in,

and you could well have also bent the inner section of that shaft

Bent it?! Doubt that! They're a bit tougher than that! Worst you'll do is wreck the balance bearing or the diff oil seal.

It's an arse of a job. If you haven't got the rad out already, get it out. Make access easier.
Get the diff up over the lip on the subframe first, use an engine crane or beam to support the weight while you position it. But generally it's just that....shit. Stick with it.

You need more practise Kitch, they really aren't that hard once you get the knack! Okay my first clutch change took 3 weeks, near continuous, but these days it can be done in an afternoon!

thanks for all the help :) is it possible to correct the splines if you turn the right wheel? and the push the gearbox in place? as it is now the gearbox is almost in place but i think it is the splines that is the problem.

No, you need to turn the flywheel. Turning the wheel will do no good as the diff will do it's job and the input shaft will remain where it is.

I think he means the splines on the driveshaft, possibly?

Van: Last one too me about 5 hours. It's an arsehole job. Can't remove battery tray, have to unhook hydraulics etc.

MA boxes and TU engines FTW.....2 hours!

Ok, I *think* he's left the O/S shaft in situ and is trying to refit the box?

It's unlikely a driveshaft will cause issue's they just pretty much self align and fall in..

It'll almost certainly be that the input shaft isn't ligning up with the friction plate.
Which will be easier to manipulate with the O/S shaft out of the way...

A picture speaks a thousand words..

I dont mind doing XU boxes, but yes, TU's are so much easier it's frightening!

At the other end of the scale.... ML5's

I'd do an ML5, but I don't have a 5 ton trolley jack to lift it up with

Forklift truck, essential for ML5's I reckon!
