Some issues - clutch, rear arm bearings

Post by Dollywobbler »

Hi folks

So far, preparing the car for the BXagon has largely consisted of paying a garage to stop it peeing LHM everywhere and fitting a louder stereo. Two things that are minor annoyances that I don't feel will threaten the trip (but are nonetheless annoying) are a clutch with a very low bite and rear arm bearings that while nicely upright, seem to groan more than a crowd after one of my jokes.

I'm guessing I could try adjusting the clutch, but is there anything at all that can be done about the rear arm bearings? Other than replace them that is. Maybe I should just turn the new stereo up...

I'd be a bit more concerned about the clutch rather than the rear arm bearings if I were you. The rear arms are unlikely to let you down and leave you stranded. :(

Thats all you need to do!
Works for me...

What Ken said really.
Although TBH changing rear arm bearings isn't a bad job all in all, so if you're feeling brave and have an afternoon free you could get a couple of kits and have a stab at them..

Is the clutch heavy, and does it slip at all?
Could it just be that it needs adjusting?
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

i agree with Ken,
ansd if the clutch has a low bite point it should just need an adjustment,

as its when they bite at the end of pedel travel its more likey near or at the end of its life,

Thanks folks. I'll ignore the creaking for now and have a go at adjusting the clutch. As I haven't found my BX Haynes BOL yet, what's the score with doing it?

Clutch doesn't slip. Which is nice.

Ooh, erm, I'm a tad out of the loop here, but I'm assuming it's a N/A diesel?

If so, I guess you'll have the clutch cable that acts on the pivot arm, with a short pushrod that acts on the release arm..

At the pivot arm end of the pushrod there's a locknut (13mm IIRC), slacken it off, and adjust the cup the pushrod sits against.
I'm not explaining this very well, but it is late, and I've had a few!
It's obvious when you look at it though..

Since the clutch is biting with the pedal on the floor then you need to wind the cup into the pivot.
Erm, the cup is on the end of a threaded bar that the locknut is also on.
Am I making any sense at all?
I should do this at a more sensible hour really..

In effect what you'll be doing by adjusting the cup inwards is moving the clutch pedal higher, thereby allowing more travel on it and getting the bite point up.

its a long time since i have worked on a BX (although i do have a quite nice 16V GTI in my work shop for MOT work at the mow), but i think to raise the pedel you need to unscrew the cuped end of the adjuster bolt from the arm,

S'alright. I knew what you were on about Doc!

I'll give that a go this weekend then, if I don't get chance before.
