Definitely sounds as if there would be a benefit in changing the brushes as a first step & hopefully that will be the full solution.

An update. I never did get on Ebay and last night, turning the key just resulted in a solenoid click and no action. Got a bump start and drove home, but the charge light was on for most of the 25 mile journey and it was reading only 12v across the terminals. However, it must have charged itself a little on the journey home as I was just about able to get the starter spinning enough to restart it... (handy as I'd foolishly blocked my own garage...)

Dashed out to get a new alternator, got back home (a 50 mile round trip!) and it was the wrong one. Totally dispirited now (turns out I couldn't undo the 21mm nut either) so it's booked into a garage tomorrow. I'm borrowing a battery charger to ensure I can get there (another 25 mile drive!).

Tell you what though - I love the fact that I own a simple Citroen that will quite happily run without battery charge! And one that can be bump started. An old skill these days with cats and silly electrics...

There is a proven method for reconditioning batteries with a 'flat' cell involving little more than a mig welder. I think it should be Googlable but basically you weld across the battery terminals, cleaning up the plates and restoring performance.

 not sure i will be trying that one
