Hi folks,

I recently put my BX back on the road after a 4 year 'rest'. It just passed its NCT (Irish version of MOT). It's running fine but I just have a couple of questions. When it's parked the back sits down fully while the front stays up - is this normal? If I move the lever to the lowest setting it lies down level.

It also takes what seems to me a long time (20 - 30 seconds) to rise up to normal height for driving. How long should I have to wait from once I start up to when I take off?

This rear end sink is perfectly normal and there seems to be no hard and fast rule as to why some sink slowly and others quickly - it's down to a number of factors. A slow rise too is also fairly common - these are old cars after all. I assume the car rides OK once 'pumped up'?

Check for leaks, change the accumulator sphere if there's fast clicking from the front (every 20 seconds plus is OK but if it's down to a few seconds between clicks that's a good place to start) and maybe - next time the car's up on ramps clean and lubricate the height correctors and maybe even change the LHM.

Could possibly be a tired hydraulic pump (check that the belt is very tight)? I'd go with what Phil said, check the clicks 1st, if they are fine then it could be old lhm. If you look on the diy section of the site there are instructions on how to change the lhm. If you do go down this route & there is loads of muck/dirt/brown sludge in the bottom of the lhm tank, then i'd recommend using hydraflush 1st, otherwise all you'll do is put in clean lhm which will get dirty quite quickly as there is still crap in the system. You could also have an FDV which isnt working properly, possibly full of crap, so the hydraflush would potentially cure that as well.

Hope you manage to diagnose the problem.

the reason BX's sink at the rear after the engine is swithched off is,

because the rear suspension returns via the brake doser valve, and with age the internal seals in the doser valve are worn and cant hold the rear suspension presure,

it dose not seem to affect the car/suspension/braking once the engine is running, so most people just leave it

Malcolm, can the doseur valve be re-conditioned, or is it a case of having to buy a new one?
