Rear end sinking faster than front

Post by Leapfrog »

Hi,

I've only had my BX for a few months but in that time I can see that the rear of the car settles down much faster than the front end.

Is this normal or is it a hydraulic problem that needs to be fixed?

My Mk1 started to do this during a French summer, and it was nothing more than the front seals grabbing slightly, and holding the front up.

If leaning on the bonnet gently makes the front sink and there are no loud groans or creaks, I don't think I'd worry hugely.

It's normally a sign of wear & tear in the hydraulic system, have a search on the forum for similiar instances that other members have had. From memory, it seems to be best to just ignore it as it doesnt affect the driving experience.

If you have the time & money, it can be sorted, but i think most people dont bother. If it settled at the rear ultra quick after just switching off the ignition, then it might be a sign of a more serious problem, but if its hours or days before it does the lift off look, then as above.

its usualy down to the seals in the doser valve leaking internaly, as the rear suspension returns throught the doser valve,

a hydraulic citroen can stay up for days if all the system is in perfect order,

well that is appart from a sinker (early type ) of a XANTIA

Do you mean that the sinking Xantias sink faster than BXs etc?

i think thats about right,

except when the doser valve is not holding the rear suspension presure up,

when a BX or older hydraulic citroen suspension system is in good order there is no reason why it should not stay up for days

I think the only reason a Xantia 'sinker' may settle more than a BX is down to it's added weight. Certainly, I remember when I observed the first Xantia I saw in the flesh (a then-brand-new K reg car, which a neighbour had brought home) it dropped only half an inch or so at the rear overnight, much as I dare say a new BX would have. Obviously years of use would serve to make such a thing fairly unattainable for most 'sinkers' today...
