Help - very sluggish car

Post by MULLEY »

My txd was painfully slow at accelarating this morning, no idea why, its normally sluggish until warmed up, but not today. Even when i managed to do an italian tune up & went flat out, by the time i slowed down & stopped at a roundabout, when setting off it would barely rev beyond 3000 revs in 1st gear, even changing up was deadly slow.

Anyone got any ideas, as this is starting to get dangerous when pulling out into fast moving traffic

That's because you haven't got a turbo...

Seriously though, does show the same reluctance to rev when out of gear? Does the throttle pedal go to the floor? Is there anything stopping the throttle lever on the pump from moving over its full travel? ( I had that once where the fuel pipe had become unclipped, and was preventing full movement).

  I was waiting for that one.

I tried flooring the throttle in neutral, revs up as normal.

Fuel starvation ?- how about the fuel filter. Air intake obstructed - no dead cats, mice or birds in there! Brakes are all free'd off I assume and don't glow! Steve

Fuel starvation - could be, however when in neutral it does seem to rev up high quite quickly, its only when the car is under load that it struggles big time.

I just fitted a replacement fuel filter, so i think that rules that one out?

Air intake, dunno, if it was blocked, wouldnt i be unable to rev the car to the redline in neutral?

Don't suspect it can be the pedal box, as it does rev when in neutral.

Anyone else got any ideas?

don't assume that it if rev's okay in neutral it should in gear. When it's in gear the engine is loaded by the vehicle and so for example the engine will need to produce a lot more torque to propel the vehicle to 3000 rpm than it does to propel just the engine to that speed. More torque needs more fuel & air too. Do the tappets need checking on this engine or are they hydraulic? Steve

Righto guy's, i appreciate the input so far.

I was until this most recent fill up running on sunflower oil with derv, in a ratio of approx 75% derv to oil. So i dont think thats the problem.

Brakes, not tested that yet, but will check when i've done the following 1st.

I'm going to change the fuel filter, it was one that i'd used before & had cleaned, perhaps its restricting fuel bigtime, so i'll put a brand new one in, take the car for a spin & see if that makes any difference.

I'll check how hot the alloys are after driving to see if its a sticky caliper or not, i suspect not as i checked how much the car decelarated when lifting off the throttle at 60mph, & i've had a sticky caliper before & that made the car slow up quite quickly, which it didnt when i tried it today. But i will double check incase anyway as its easy enough to do.

If the above dont work, i'll check the fuel tank filter, to see if its gunged up & is restricting the flow of fuel at that end.

So once i've dont that lot, i'll have a look at the throttle cable to see if its somehow stretched a bit, as i must admit that to get the car to shift (& this is without any problems) its always flat to the floor, so i'm hoping that if i can tighten up any slack that might improve matters i.e less throttle pedal movement for max power.

If after all that & it stll goes as slow as a 2cv, i'll come back on here for some further help, i just hope its something simple like the fuel filter resitricting the fuel :D

Just have someone stand on the throttle pedal, and see whether you can move the arm on the pump any further. I've 'fixed' a friend's poor performance simply by straightening out her floor mat...

yep - i agree with matt - first check should be that the arm on the pump moves 100% with pedal to the floor.
