Interesting that no-one has yet considered loss from the water pump. Though I once drove a Fiat to Spain and back with a leaking water pump, I've been driving a BX's for 15 years and never had or heard of BX's having water pump issues - maybe this item really is totally robust?

I mention it as I need a timing belt change, and my man mentioned possibly replacing the water pump. So I came here to look for water pump issues, but the forum search seems to not be working just now.

My understanding is that seeing as they are so cheap off e-bay to buy, as a precaution they are worth changing even if the old one looks to be ok.

Funny you say that! As a matter of course it seems that NZ mechanics will replace a water pump when they replace a cambelt.

I reccon your head gasket is a problem. Is the cooling system pressurised when cold? If it is then its the head gasket for sure.

Yep me too, I'm afraid not mentioning it won't make it go away! bubbles in the coolant straight away + rapid heating points to combustion gases in the cooling system, time to do a pressure test my friend.
