Citroen BX TZD - Welding

Post by Cameron39 »

Our much loved Citroen BX 1.7 TZD has just failed it's MOT as it requires extensive welding. I desperatly do not want to let the car go because of welding issues, but may have to if it can't be fixed economically.

Does anyone know anywhere in the Yorkshire area that could do a welding job quite cheaply to help my BX pass it's MOT?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Regards, Cameron.

there's various bits all over. Theres some to do under the front wings and around the seatbealt anchorage points (that's what's made it fail the MOT) I don't know precicely how much without having a look myself, the BX is at my local garage at the minute so i don't know. I'll keep you posted the more i find out.

it might not be as bad as it sounds on the faliure, as they say excessive even when it just a small hole, and the seat belt prescribed area is any rust within 30cm in all directions around said seat belt mountting,

I don't want to sound a smug git - but this kind of dilemma has prompted many owners of old cars and bikes to go out and buy a cheap Mig welder, and teach themselves to weld their own patches.

I'd respectfully suggest that an ability to weld is as important as the ability to waggle a spanner if you're going to own a classic car .... and the money it saves is astonishing, given the cost of paying for welding in a garage.

If I can weld, then anyone can - and my Clarke Miggy has paid for itself so many times in so many ways I can't imagine how I got by without it. From welding a broken hinge bracket on a bloody expensive built-in cooker (parts unobtainable of course  ) to making my own greenhouse benches out of scrap strip for free - it's all within reach.

Rust repairs on bodywork for MOT are a walk in the wossname with an hour's practice with some scrap steel on the bench first - it's surprisingly easy once you get the knack - and a little more practice'll see you tackling neat patches on the visible bits too.

Just my 'umble opinion like.

That's not a bad idea, but the BX doesn't require enough welding to make me buy a welder. This is the second MOT that it's required welding, so i don't think i've done badly really. Thank you for the suggestion though. I'm looking for someone who will weld it cheaply as the job estimate is a bit over the top.
I'm going to collect it today so i'll see then. Hopefully it's not that bad, but they say it requires 2 days of welding which i'm not sure whether that is truthful or not. But as far is a know, there's just little rust spots in various places but i'm not sure which are compulsory to repair yet.

VOSA state any rust within 30cm of seat belt/susspension and steering mounttings, this is all directions of those points upwards, downwards, forwards, backwards and up and down,

Thank you, yes it's within that perimiter. Just got back from the garage and theres a spot infront of the seatbelt anchorage point on both sides of the car (Rear seats) each hole about the size of a 20p coin and there's some under the bonnet around the front offside suspesion sphere and mounting.
It also requires 4 spheres, but we've been quoted a reasonable price for this, but the welding is holding us back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated in terms of the rust otherwise the BX will have to go for scrap and i can't bear for that to happen. It's a very reliable car (as all BX's are) and much loved despite not being used very often.
Regards, Cameron.

can anyone recommend anyone who can do welding?

We've had two quotes now from main dealers. Both a bit too expensive for us. I'm willing to travel and the car is roadworthy so i can bring it to you.

I suggest you ring Malcolm Lockwood on 01274 640590 who will supply you all four spheres for about £17.50 each +vat. Fit the front ones yourself and I'll do the rear ones for you if you can't manage them.

My mate can do welding but I'd have to put you in touch with him to see if he's willing to do it for you.

We're in Wakefield by the way.
They think it's all over, it is now!

If you can leave it with me for a week and are willing to bring it down to Kearsley Bolton (1 mile from M60 Swinton turn off) I will fit it in FOC.

To just comment on the 'its not worth buying a welder just to do this' sorta comments above.

I think personally thats not quite correct, i mean, you will be keeping the TZD for a while right? Will it want more welding for the next MOT? probably it will, so buying a welder is a long term commitment to the BX that you seem so fond of :) :)
