Straight Veg. Oil

Post by scarecrow »

I was just wondering if anyone has tried this?

Bulk prices are around £14 to £15 /litre.

Has anyone experienced any 'issues' - in particular with the 1.9 diesel? I know you need a Bosch pump... and that's about all I know.

Oh - I understand individuals are permitted to use up to 2500 litres /yr without paying duty.

Try the search function, there's loads about this particular query, saves having to repeat it all again tbh. If after reading it all & then you have some questions, then fair enough get posting & those with some experience of using said veggie oil can respond :D

Though there are many people who have done it, I personally wouldn't run even a Bosch pump on 'neat veg'. I ran my two diesels ( with Bosch pumps) on it for two months and I had to change seals on both pumps which started leaking. When I went to buy the seals from Bosch, the man knew what I had been up to and said that those pumps - despite popular opinion - were not designed for the job. The seals were a few pence but removing the pumps and associated palavar took eventually days!
It seems here that even the regular diesel that you buy at the pumps has a low percentage of veg in it now. Mixing the two doesn't seem to be as bad.

Cheers people - after researching some more, and with your advice, it's not really viable. Back to the drawing board then.

Maybe a horse? No, I'd need a stripped down Renault 12 for that.

I've just finished cleaning and waxing the old girl which should add a few mpg ;)

You could always have a twin tank system if you really wanted to go down the veg oil route, only trouble is that veg oil isnt significantly cheaper than derv.

A few years ago veg oil was as cheap as can be, i think i remember paying less than 40p/l, so it was less than half the price of derv, so if you did the miles it was worth it.

You can always take the risk & use it mixed with derv, just take note of pump damage, i tend to run my car in the summer months only when the temperatures are highish so that the viscocity of veg oil is quite thin to avoid premature pump damage.

It'll damage it eventually i guess, but i'll only use veg oil if i can get it cheap, otherwise i just dont bother & havent used it for a while now, especially with this winter that we've had.

I've also used biodiesel as well, in more than a 50% concentration the car didnt really like it that much, otherwise it runs fine, although i find the mpg not as good as derv, not quite sure why that is, but its usually 10p/l cheaper, so if the maths works out then that might be a goer?

What i have noticed is that performance with biodiesel isnt as good as derv, but if i put a few litres of veg oil into a tank of derv, the performance is quite a bit better, no idea why, almost like have a little turbo attached
