My bx has 2 fans is that normal? and steering problems

Post by jacksun1987 »

My bx 1.7 td has 2 fans. My grandad said he only had one on his easte. He had the same modle as mine tzd. Just wonderd if any one else has got 2

Also having some problems with my steering.
Its really hard to explane. One minite everything is fine. Next minite there s sort of like a pulling sensastion. Is that to do with the Hyidrolics? I know one of the spheres need changing. Becase the pumping is 2 fast. Think its the mean accuminater one. Could that be a problem with the steering?

Yes i know my spelling is bad

Thanks

I got two fans on the TZS but as I understand it the reason for that is being fitted with Aircon you need a second fan. IF you dont have aircon oh well you got extra cooling ability.

As for the power steering problem. I recall that happening as a result of a blockage in the FDV filters. I had this happen to one minute fine then a pulling sensation after I done an FDV rebuild. Turned out I fitted a filter the wrong way.

Could be a silt build up in the FDV blocking that filter?

Felt it more when i got it home. On my normal roads.

Hi,

2 fans are better than one. As kiwi says, usually fitted on aircon cars, and those with towing kits. I fitted a 2nd one on my BX and it helps a lot in heavy summertime traffic.

Steering problem: I would start with a new accumulator sphere, a filter clean and a hydra flush. That does not cost much and is not hard to do.

If the problem persists, especially when the car/weather is cold it may be that the hydraulic pump is worn out.
That is more expensive, but don't worry about that until the cheaper alternatives have been ruled out.

Mike

ps the spelling looks OK to me.

Should i ask the to do it. Im taking it in saturday. I might need a new dashboard. Plus the electrics one the boot are not working. Like the reverse light back heater Back windscreen wiper. One on the leads is not charging any amps. So its not the builbs. The boot is from another car. So they have rushed it. And not connected it up porpperly. The more i find things wrong. The more the bill is going to be. But might has well get it all done. The engine just needs a service i think. Body work is ok on it. Once thats done it will be a goood car. Ill do the service my self.
Thanks for the spelling comment lol
Your the first one to say lol

Just get a new accumulator sphere fitted, then see how it goes. Don't be so keen to throw money at it, there are ways of running a BX on the cheap.

I would concentrate on getting the hydraulics sorted.

I had intermittant power steering on mine, it was a royal pain.

the electrical stuff sounds fairly trivial, they can wait while you fix them, as long as the tail lights and brake lights work.

I am not sure why you would need a new dashboard, problems here are often caused by a poor or broken earth connection.

cheers,

Mike

To my knowledge the non turbo diesels had a single fan, unless the towing pack was fitted (or I guess if A/C was installed). I remember when I was about 12, my Dad using the fact that the TD had two fans (and therefore wouldn't need a second fan fitted for towing his caravan) as justification for spending the extra on a DTR turbo no less! (Think it cost him about £7k)

I've got twin fans on my 1.9 TRD and a tow bar, suggesting that old Wilhelm who bought the car from new was a caravaner..

Yeah, but is there anything your TRD doesn't have? I think 'old Wilhelm' just went down the options and accessories lists and ticked absolutely everything, whether he needed them or not!

Might need a new dashboard. Becase the trip swich has gone. Petrol gage and Rev counter dont work as well.
Yes i though it might be a towing pack. Didnt know they did such extras.

Thanks

Hey, I think you should try the simple things first! I'd check all the fuses are good as it could simply be a blown fuse that's knocked out the fuel gauge and rear wiper etc.

Also the power steering on the BX isn't affected by the accumulator sphere - only the pump, fluid, filter and the first of two internal valves on the FDV. I'd do as suggested, chenge the LHM, filters and the 2 filters of the FDV and see how it goes. Also! ensure that the hydraulic pump drive belt is immensely tight.

After all that then check the pump suction pipe is not sucking air in. Check the pump with the belt removed like David Rutherford suggested recently, by turning it by hand and 'feeling' the 5 'notches' when turning it. If there are less than five in a row then the pump has one or more piston stuck - this will make the steering pulse.

Keep us updated!
