manual wing mirror replacement

Post by creative »

Hi everybody,

I have just damaged my father in laws manual wing mirror, BX1.4 20 yrs old. Have ordered a new part and was wondering how difficult it is to replace.
Have tried to find repair manual on internet but cannot.
Any help please much appreciated.

Its very easy, just two screws hold it on, however you must remove the door card/ interior panel first which in itself is quite easy.

Don't let a screw fall into the door though - as I did.

Thanks roverman,

What do you mean by doorcard/interior panel please?

Sorry to seem stupid but what is this.

He means the complete interior door trim panel (known as a door card), interior pull handle then gently prise the door card away with a wide flat srewdriver or blade. If you haven't taken one off before I doubt you will get it off without breaking some of the plastic clips.(replacements available on ebay) all becomes apparent once it is off.

Personally I would not use a screwdriver but something flat and wide like a tyre lever. Even a flat wide bladed chisel!

Why because it reduces the risk of damaging the panel and does not exert so much streess on those clips you want to avoid braking.

1. Using either a large torx, or phillips screwdriver-depending on the model year-remove the screws fixing the door arm rest to the door.

Carefully pull it off, taking care of the hard plastic trim that surrounds the softer stuff-it can crack easily, and is impossible to find good ones these days!

2. Using either a large chisel or plasterers blade-covered in tape-starting at the bottom of the door, 'pop' the door clips off the door, ONE BY ONE! You want to use a balance of brute force and gentilisity!! You are almost guaranteed a break or two, and likely some are broken from a previous monkeys work too. Replace all and any-this will cut back rattles a fair bit later on.

3. With the door card off, you can access the screws for the mirror-use a magnetic driver!! they again will either be torx or phillips depending on year/modification.

4. Replace door mirror, slide door card back on, gently bang the clips back in place, chuck on door armrest, tighten screws, job done.

20 mins tops, have a cuppa!

Wow,, that was fun.
You have to remember I am at someone elses house in another part of Greece. and not my car.

First find an amazing array of tools in FIL workshop.

Things you forgot to tell me...
Unscrew central locking plunger.
Take off Radio speaker cover to remove two screws holding door panel and another just under the mirror lever.
Remove three screws to arm rest.

To remove the panel I used a plasterers trowel without breaking any door clips. Yaaa
Remove panel.
Remove circular plastc cover over lever. Watch as the foam behind it disintergrates.
Remove the two screws holding mirror assembly, with magnetic screwdriver ( Thanks for that ace tip}
Fit new mirror, shout for wife for a torch (Eyesight getting bad)
No torch but wife wants to help, I know guys but every little helps.
Eventually find screw holes and secure new mirror.
Thank wife for help, now leave me alone darling.
Refit all previous screws panels etc
Total 1hr 15 mins (15 mins arguing with wife)

Thanks again guys, job well done.

Yep you normally learn by breaking something, do you have any photos of your car?
