Welding, can anyone help?

Holy Shit

I'd no idea how much cutting you'd need to do to get that rust out, i guess the only way to ensure its all gone is to physically remove it all. That weld even to my untrained eye looks absolutely superb.

Very nice work there Kevan, anyone would think you've done it before...

You just have to get rid of the whole rusted area, I know, as even if you grind the rust away there's a chance you will make the metal so thin that you end up blowing holes in it.

Thanks chaps, I've done the O/S today and althought it didn't look as bad from inside the engine bay it looked just as bad from underneath and removal of the seam sealer with a heat gun confirmed it;

All done

Wow, another great piece of metal cut out, at least my car is consistently rotten

That looks superb Kevan, & i dont think that engine bay has ever looked as clean either. Hopefully that part of the car will never need treating again, or for another 17 years at least which is how long the inner wings lasted the 1st time around.

It's good to see someone else making good use of zinc-rich primer. Whilst I've only ever gone over it with bitumen black afterwards (I am less concerned about cosmetics than many!) I still think Zinc-rich primer is the best protection you can give to car metal.

Yes and I find the Zinc rich primer very good to use, it covers and adheres very well.

Sorry mate not only do I not have time at the moment I don't have use of this workshop at the moment either. The buiding of my own workshop at home is nearing completion with me hoping to wire it up in the next couple of weeks but it will be at least next year before I will have caught up with all my own jobs and even have time to consider volunteering for any new ones

I found a local mobile welder who does a lot of work on classic cars... He was great and I learnt some techniques too!
We did my really rotten a post where the top hinge connects... this took a whole day but before we got stuck into that he chopped out some inner wing and welded in a new piece and it took him all of about 20 mins... Although this was a small bit around the lip where the plastic inner arch clips into...

It was really good to help out and learn from someone who enjoys and is good at what they do - as well as paying them! You also get to see and check they're doing the job properly

Yes, really anyone who wants to keep their BX's should be checking this achilles heel of the BX and sorting it now before it goes too far.

/\ & that, i've just been doing some remedial work / prevention since seeing your work / reminder at weekend. Caught them just in time (well perhaps a little late)
