Gearbox Clutch and Reverse

Post by ChrisC »

After adjustment\service you can change gears fine, but after a few weeks it usually goes back to crunching when going into reverse.

Is this a standard problem - or can it be fixed?

Any help greatfully rewcieved

thanks

Mine has a habit of crunching in reverse, especially after a long run. Being slow and/or double pumping the clutch sometimes helps.

Bear in mind there is no synchromesh on reverse, so if the oil is warm, or your engine idle is a bit high, you may need to wait 2-3 seconds from pressing the clutch to allow the input shaft to spin down before engaging reverse.
this might be a signature

That's a point. When I think about it, I always drop into second before first in the 2CV (synchro-free first) so maybe I'll drop in a gear to stop the box with the BX too.

usualy if it becomes difficult to engadge gears soon after the clutch has been adjusted, it could mean something is failling/breaking like the bracket on the rear of the pedel box, clutch fork, or the actuatting arm,

Or even the fingers of the diaphragm spring on the clutch cover...

Errm, should I be worried...?

I don't think it is a syncromesh issue, when I say crunch, it is more like CRRRRUNCH even after several attempts.

Summit is up, or down, any pointers will help. The car is currently SORN whilst I wait for the carb to be fixed. I'll get it properly looked over then, but if I know where to look first it'll be a great help

thanks

you can check everything you can see for cracks or damage

then if it is something breaking/failling, just try adjusting it a bit more to see how long it last's, eventually what ever is falling will go completely,
