Cheap BX tzd estate Ebay 120573952762

Post by SteveM »

Been looking for a tidy BX for a while as I have a 3.0 toyota surf which does kak to the gallon. I had a 19rd estate about 15 years ago and apart from dismantling the box and replacing a broken shaft it was pretty good.
Been looking on ebay for a tidy one on ebay as they'll actually do it on a classic policy which doesn't involve a fresh no claims bonus. anyway bought this tonight on ebay 120573952762 for what seems a reasonable amount given the history etc, however the seller has just informed me that when he took the photos a week ago he noticed a LHM leak at the rear ( which he failed to mention in the add). He also stated that somebody else had come to view the vehicle today and said it was coming from the rear height corrector. Now if this was me I would have ammended the advert to reflect this. Maybe i'm just too honest.
The car is in Essex and I live in North Wales, his only words of wisdom thus far is " I'll give you a bottle of LHM and you should be OK ). I am hoping to do several trips to France this summer and have my heart set on a tidy BX ( you might as well have a french car in france) but my question is should I avoid this ?. The suspension was fine on my old BX so not got a great deal of experience on the subject.

Many Thanks

Steve

It all depends how bad the leak is. If it's just a drip, you should be ok.
The only other problem around this area, is the two pipes that come out of the top of the rear height corrector, one has a bad habit of chaffing against the plastic return pipe causing the metal pipe to rub through, but this would be quite a severe leak.
If it is just the H/C itself that's leaking, they're not a bad job to change, unlike the front one.

Yes I agree with you, he should have amended the listing accordingly.

Thanks for he reply i'll contact him tomorrow and get him to investigate it further I will be driving it about 240 miles back to North Wales, I would be a little concerned about any sudden drop in pressure effecting the braking capabiities.

Cheers

looks tidy enough, how long has he owned it? I would be interested to know if he is the 'one carefull owner since 97' or has he bought recently and is selling it on. How well does he know the car, does he sound honest in his answers because like you said he should have mentioned it and amended his advert because it certainly wouldn't have fetched that much if he had. I think a fresh offer to reflect this would be a recommended route.

I too liked the look of this one, but resisted it because of distance from the north-east.

Best of luck.

One other thing just noticed, it's not actually a TZD, it's a 19TGD, normally aspirated 1.9 diesel.

my spelling mistake, I knew it was a non turbo. He appears to have had it since 97 and replaced it with a Xantia ( boring). Someone came to view it on Sunday and said the leak appears to be from the height adjuster ( drip). split seal possibly.

Tidy ones don't appear to come around that often so ive bit the bullet and bought it so I guess I will need a window sticker thing.

Chester to Manningtree ( via Euston) £37.50, couldn't beleive it, have to get up at silly o'clock but will be the at 9.30 on Friday so hopefully miss the traffic coming back up north. Will report back at the weekend.

Cheers

Steve.

Just a couple of things to point out here, Xantias are never boring
recommended ownership for masochists.

and

never fit one of those window stickers if you intend driving your car anywhere, they are the kiss of death

Looks tidy enough, and a height corrector and a couple of pipes is an easy enough fix. There aren't too many good estates about so I'd say go with this one.

My sister lives in Manningtree. Which is of no use to you whatsoever, but I thought you'd like to know...

You want ripoff insurance, you should come over here to France and sign up with Aviva... cover on my TD estate (kind of glorified TPFT cover) has crept up to nearly 500 euros a year despite full NCB. Add in the H van and the MX-5 and I was paying over 1000 euros a year. Ouch. Finally got off my arse to get some quotes and can get classic fleet cover with a specialist classic insurer for virtually everything I own for a few hundred euros, so long as I also insure my daily driver (the TD) with them. Their quote for that is half what I'm paying at the minute, for better cover... Hmmn, with the money I save, I could buy a Landrover...
