Starter Motor Removal

Post by MULLEY »

I've tried getting the starter motor out of my TZD Turbo, managed to get the various pipes out of the way so that i can actally see the 3 bolts holding it in place.

I've been unable to budge those bolts, i've sprayed on some wd40 to see if it frees them up a bit, no joy. The only tool i've got is a medium sized shank length allen key, i used a hammer on the allen key to try & get it to shift, no luck. Anyone got any tips/advice on getting these bolts moving? Should i try & give them a whack with the hammer to shock them into moving? Or do i just need a better tool to give me more leverage (what type do i need)?

Apologies for the daft question & the countless more that i'll be posting shortly no doubt as i try & resurrect the Blue beast which has been sat sorry for the last few years

Try a piece of tube on the allen key for extra leverage or a ring sanner, but watch those knuckles when it fly's off

I used a 1/2" drive allen key and rachet drive, should be available from motor factors.

They are tight ! I did completely the wrong thing not knowing if they were allen or torx - I used a 10mm hex drive torx bit with a 10mm socket on 1/2" drive ratchet. The right size 1/2" drive allen is the right way to go though.

Try using your trolley jack handle as leverage (as Ken says), but if you just heave on an allen key of low quality it may just twist or break. It may help to apply a reasonable amount of force with the tube whilst hitting the allen key into the bolt head to try and shock it loose (like a primative impact driver!)
IIRC correctly I'd say it's likely to be poor contacts inside the solenoid (I managed to get it to work by pulsing the solenoid back and forth), so may respond well to a strip and clean up if you feel so inclined.

you need an 8mm allen key blade that fits into a 1/2 drive socket, attach this to a 1/2 inch drive ratchet,
