my mk1 diesel has bad water leak!

Post by ren16tx »

Sophie my mk1 italian bx 19trd showed her age the other day, and couldn't hold her water any longer!!! bless her! happened on the A3 just outside Guilford! and had to be relayed home!!!
i know the radiator is on its way out,and keep a close eye on that, however, she's blown a pipe or something from behind the engine?? you pour water into the rad, and pours straight out from behind the engine!! so in effect, is not drivable, luckily, the headgasket is ok!
im no machanic! so any ideas/suggestions/help would be great!

for sure, but which one :?:

There are several candidates.

The heater pipes that go through the bulkhead would be favourite. Not too easy to get at, but there are worse ones behind there. So we won't talk about them yet :)

Chris
it could also be the water branch at the rear of the engine, or one of the rubber blanking cap's fitted to the water branch

i've had a good look today, and what a sod!! it appears to be a split hose, the hose comes from the bulk head and at the other end, where it sleeves over a metal pipe, is split there, i've tried to "blank" the hose off, with no effect to water losage!! this the heater hose??
is this a driveshaft out job??is it a garage job??

Yes it's one of the heater hoses :(

You're right, not a good job but is do-able, just awkward.

No idea if the hose is available now or not. The main thing to be careful of, is not to break the plastic pipes that go through the bulkhead then you will have a bad job on your hands.

Just take your time and be patient. Access may be improved by jacking up the engine, then remove the top engine mount and pull the engine forward, wedge a suitable piece of wood between the engine and bulkhead to help you. :)

It's OK, they'll probably charge you more than the car's worth and manage to break something else in the process, then tell you it was broken already

or am I being cynical :?
