How loud is your horn?

Post by Thickasmud »

Surprise, surprise my old TGD failed her MOT with even more problems than last year. However the one that really annoyed me was apparently "the horn is not loud enough to alert other road users"!!! Definately working but is single tone. Can someone please tell me how many horns are supposed to be on a 1990 BX19 and how loud should it/they be? I have removed, de-rusted and cleaned all connections to the horn on passenger side behind bumper but no change in its volume.

You'll probably find that the diaphragm actuating mechanism has got caked with mud or partially sezied up, limiting its travel and thus its loudness.

I had considerable success with my elderly Mk1's horn by chucking it a bucket of hot soapy water (to remove the mud) and then swilling it out with copious quantities of WD40 (to remove the water).

The horn went through a kind of puberty experience as a result, inasmuch as its voice most definitely broke.............

Bob's suggestion to refurb the horn is probably best but if you want it more clearly defined and you're not too far from Woking then we can test it - I have a sound level meter and a BX with a single working horn to compare it to.

My horn is usefully embellished with some helpful verbal advice emanating from somewhere in the cabin. There are also a few visual clues I like to provide to make sure the message isn't lost in translation.

Not sure if that would be acceptable for an mot though?

Or you could just buy a new one, they dont cost much! you will need to remove the front bumper though.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

...or just relocate the new one somewhere easier to get to and swap/splice-in some new wires.

When I was young I used to collect horns from the scrappy to make my Marina more tuneful.

I thought you only had to take out the wheel arch liner to get to the horn?

Although its debateable as to which is easier to remove.

True, I find it easier to pop the bumper off.

I've always found the horn on my txd to be rubbish, can a nice double french horn be fitted instead (or a louder one of any description)?

Anyone ever done one & can let me know how to go about doing this, never done one in my life, so it's about time i learnt
