That was one of the last clues to the burn't valves as unburned petrol vapour was in the exhaust system (with an occasional backfire too :shock: )

Sounds like the anti-stall diaphram
I'm sure that this is the unobtainable part that the garage finally managed to source in Germany, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I can see I'm going to have to pay out to have these repairs checked (tappets too) if I can't find a gasket problem with the techniques suggested.

I've used the WD40 test - but had the revs drop as (presumably) it temporarily sealed the air leak. Either way, if spraying it around a joint causes a change, there must be some leak.

Unlikely - several places in the UK still provide carb recon kits - pull the vacuum pipe off and sniff it - very easy quick test to be sure.
