Diesel Rev Counter not working

Post by adamskibx »

Does anyone know where the pickup for the rev counter is? I have a double connector plug half way down the n/s bulkhead not plugged into anything and another plug on the near side of the engine not going to anything, but the two are obviosly not meant to go together as they are both female.

Thanks,

Adam

Flywheel, back of engine block. Access from underneath if required. You should find a 3 way connector (brown?) above the gearbox bellhousing.

Does anyone know if the sender and wiring was fitted as standard to all cars, irrespective of whether they had the rev counter in the cluster or not...? steve

Good question Steve. I'd like the answer to that as well as I may be fitting a diesel to a petrol BX at some point in the nearish future.

Every BX I've ever seen has the flywheel TFC sensor regardless of rev counter fitting, but not all had the loom up to the dash.
My RD didn't, easy to add though, you only need an ign. live, an earth and some wires down to the sensor.

If converting petrol to diesel you'll need the rev counter aswell, I'm pretty sure the signal generated by the TDC sensor on a diesel wont fire a petrol rev counter.

Thanks Matt. I will investigate this. I have a long red wire that was trapped under the battery that looks like it might be the one to go to the sensor.

On mine it's a 3 core grey wire to a brown (I was right!) 3 way connector, I've just checked. Citroen seemed reluctant to use red wires in the loom (but they obviously had a vast surplus of green, blue and yellow) so it may be an aftermarket addition?

I have a photo which I'll try and post up tomorrow.

Thanks so much Matt. Unfortunately its plugged in already on mine. There are 3 wires on one side and only two going into the 3 terminal plug coming from the bulkhead, but this looks to be standard. The rev counter dos flinch when I turn the ignition, but thats it. Time for some multimeter and wiring diagram fun I gues :-)

Yes, the thrid wire from the sensor is just a shield wire.

IF the needle kicks when the ignition is turned on then the guage is most likely fine, and has power.
I'll wager it's the tDC sensor itself, either needs pushing in closer to the flywheel, or it's dead.
Still available the stealer for not much.

Thanks for the pointer Doc. I think I will need to take the HP pump off to gain access to the sensor.

no no, it's down the rear face of the block pointing in towards the flywheel from behind.
Get the car in the air, and attack it from underneath!

You can see it on this photo, follow the grey cable to the white sensor. (The lengths I go to to get a useful photo, guess I should put the engine back in now! )

now that is dedication!

EDIT: although the sensor itself is black, the white bit is the bracket for it.
