the sensor bolts to the engine rather than the gearbox, so removing the gearbox shouldn't affect the tacho, BUT, thats not to say it hasn't been disturbed during the work. The bracket is plastic and only located with a peg and a 10mm bolt, they usually work loose anyhow, so it's entirely possible it was a bit loose to start with and got nudged whilst removing or refitting the box.
If they break down internally the usually work when cold and pack up when the engine warms up, so if yours failed totally during the clutch job, I'd start with checking the sensor is located and the pinch bolt is tight
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Ah mine was working when cold and packing up when the engine warmed up. Only reason I really noticed is because the air temperature is cold now and it should have been working. But has not since the clutch job. So if it aint snowing tomorrow (the forecast says it might) or persilating with rain (as it seems to most days I will look into the loose connection first.

Failing that have you a rough idea of the cost of a new sensor?

The answer is somewhere in this very thread...
(But whether it's a similar price down there is another matter!)
