No brake lights?

Post by richardd1652 »

Just checked over the TGE tonight as its booked in for an MOT tommorow afternoon ,all wipers horn, squirters etc all present and correct but noticed when backing up to garage door in the dark that there arnt any brake lights. So ive popped the lights out and bulbs are fine.As its been stood 4 years i was wondering if possible that brake light switch on the pedal may be stuck/faulty?
Will check in daylight but what are your thoughts?

Quite possibly the switch, they do fail.
Oddly the later replacement plastic ones are worse than the original brass nutted units..

Pull the wires off and bridge them out, if the lights come on, it's the switch.

I've had it before where the wire's have fractured internally about 3" up from the connector that caused intermittent lights, but that seemed more prevalant on cars with ABS.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Thanks for the help but ive sorted it.After bridging a supply to the switch and also bypassing like you suggested and still nothing i re-examined the wiring and it turned out to be a dodgy connection on the n/s/r lamp as it seems power goes to that one then across to other so now they work.MOT at 2pm so fingers crossed it doesnt get slaughtered?

Mine has a dodgy earth there Richard - one mot tester fixed it during the mot for me with an electrical-contact cleaning spray. I must get some. Incidentally, an identical thing happened with another car during another mot and that garage tried to persuade me I needed major electrical work done. The pleasure I got when the light came on after I gave the offending cluster a good whack
