I've used a fine grade of 'wet 'n' dry' - 400 or 600 from memory. If you cut a 1/4" strip and fold it over the end of a small screwdriver you can get inside the male part of the connectors to clean them. It's also useful for cleaning the bulb contacts themselves which can give problems from time to time.and clean the contacts well with emmery paper.
