the old dears bx!!

Post by goldenbrown »

been driving the bx and found that it has started to make a knocking noise. On further investigation i have found it coming from what looks like a compressor (next to fan belt)when i touch the pipes coming from it i feel the knock also i can hear air from somewhere any ideas what this could be!!

If you don't have aircon on your car, that will be the hydraulic pump for the suspension/brakes/steering. Have you checked that your LHM is at the correct level in the reservoir?

The BX requires LHM & if there are any leaks of this fluid will require topping up (& leak repair if applicable) or ultmately the pump will run dry & the suspension will fail with damage to the pump & system.

As you face the engine there is a green container with pipes on the wing to the left which has a float indicator on top. With the suspension set to its highest setting look at this float valve which should indicate between the middle marks. If it is low then fill with LHM (NOT HYDRAULIC FLUID) until the indicator reads correctly.
LHM can be bought at a motor factors, not so easy to find at a petrol station.

Thanks for that, on the normal setting the bubble on the top of the green reservoir is right at the top where should it be top or bottom?,also i have found that there seems to be a bit more oil around the bottom sphere!!

use a bit of white bog roll to suck some up by dipping it into the wet bit... if it's green you have a leak in the hydraulic system (or are very messy when topping it up)

EDIT: assuming some numpty hasn't used normal brake fluid.

Ok with the suspension set on the highest setting the level indicator on top of the green reservoir is on the top red line.

Have you taken the lid off of the green lhm reservoir and eyeballed your fluid? Give the area around the lid a bit of a clean as the hydraulic system is very sensitive to dirt.

Do the hydraulics work? Suspension goes up and down? Brakes? Power steering? Is the suspension very hard at normal driving height?

Try to give a more detailed description of what you are experiencing with the car and someone might be able to give you a more accurate diagnosis of possible causes.

Ok,the cars suspension/brakes and power steering all seem to work fine the brakes are fantastic!!on tick over I can hear a knocking sound coming from what looks like a compressor if i put my fingers on the small pipe coming from it I can feel the knocking through it!!also i can hear a hissing sound from the lower part of the engine but cant seem to find it.
